ED Caused By These Common Pain Killers

Men who have chronic pain conditions who are also taking a certain class of pain medication have one more item to add to the long list of side effects of the drugs.

In a mega-study of more than 11,000 people and published in Spine magazine, researchers looked at the prevalence of Erectile Dysfunction in men who take a popular class of pain killer and found troubling results.

[adrotate group=”5″]A study looking at the effects of taking a popular class of drug called opioids was published in a recent publication of Spine magazine. Its focus was on the effect of long-term use and erectile functioning.

The focus for the 11,000-participant study was on men with back pain who were also taking opioids to control it. Opioids include drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone, and merepidine (Demerol).

What the researchers found was that the men taking the highest doses of the drugs had the highest incidence and worst severity of problems with ED.

They also found that the longer a man took an opioid for pain, the more likely he was to experience ED. As well, there was a correlation between the duration of use and severity of ED symptoms.

Opioids are used in the management of pain but have been problematic in a growing trend of abuse among users. They cause sleep disturbances, constipation, heart problems and are highly addictive.
