Diabetics have been told for years that diabetes can and does cause vision loss, but a study recently out of UGA College of Pharmacy showed the damage to be directly tied to high blood pressure, another known condition to plague diabetics.
Researchers found that within less than 3 months of developing high blood pressure, diabetic mice showed evidence of vision loss that wasn’t present before the hypertension kicked in.
The study, published by the Journal of Molecular Vision, examined the process behind the damage to vision.
High blood pressure damages blood vessels all over the body. This includes the tiniest ones that supply nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood to the optic nerves, retina, and other areas of the eyes.
High blood pressure is a known companion to diabetes; both types one and two.
Strict control over blood sugar and blood pressure have been shown to be the most beneficial for maintaining vascular health and preserving eyesight and blood flow to extremities at risk of damage from vascular problems.
