Add lower blood pressure to the laundry list of benefits ascribed to healthy sleep. According to a new study older adults who get enough deep wave sleep –a type of sleep associated with healthy sleep habits—have 83% lower hypertension risk than those that don’t sink deeply into sleep.
Along with a lack of total sleeping hours, poor deep sleep levels can indicate obstructive sleep apnea – a condition where the airways become blocked during sleep. The scientists note that the lack of sleep can boost blood pressure by increasing levels of inflammation and contributing to obesity.
