If you’re living with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), you might already feel it.
Slower recall.
Brain fog.
That frustrating moment where the word’s on the tip of your tongue… and then it’s just gone.
Turns out, it’s not your imagination.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is hard on your brain.
And a new study published in Clinical and Translational Science just found something surprisingly simple that might protect it.
Researchers followed 34 people with moderate CKD for a full year.
Half took sodium bicarbonate capsules daily—the same ingredient that’s in plain old baking soda.
The other half took a placebo.
No one changed their meds.
No one went on a new diet.
The only difference was those tiny capsules.
After 12 months, the baking soda group did better on both memory tests and brain scans.
People on the placebo showed the usual pattern: thinning of the cortex in areas associated with memory, planning, and attention.
But those on bicarbonate?
Their brain structure held steady.
In some spots, the cortex actually got thicker.
That doesn’t happen by accident. Especially not in people over 60 with declining kidney function.
So what’s the link?
When your kidneys lose function, your body builds up acid. Not enough to feel sick, but enough to slowly damage tissues, vessels, and brain cells.
Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes that acid.
That’s it.
That’s the whole trick.
It doesn’t cure CKD. It won’t turn back the clock. But it might just keep your brain working better for longer.
And the treatment was safe and well-tolerated across the board with no side effects.
So if you or someone you love has CKD, this study proves that small, natural changes can make a big impact.
But baking soda is just the beginning.
