Hypothyroidism is known for causing fatigue, weight disturbances, cold, dry skin and hair, muscle cramps, and depression, but it can be substantially more serious.
A new study in the Journal Medicine reveals hypothyroidism can kill without warning!
The researchers searched several medical databases and found 10 articles on 15 studies published before October 2022.
Their survey yielded the following findings:
-
1. People with subclinical or overt hyperthyroidism were 32% more likely to have blood clots.
2. Those with subclinical or overt hypothyroidism had a terrifying 74% increased blood clot risk.
Researchers do not currently understand exactly why these thyroid dysfunctions should lead to blood clotting.
Recent studies have found that people with hypothyroidism have high levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, which blocks the production of enzymes that break up blood clots.
However, the science of how it works is still unclear.
We do know that blood clotting can be extremely dangerous. For many people, blood clots cause no symptoms until it’s too late.
