The scientists, from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai were presented with an interesting case that they could not fix.

A 31-year-old man arrived at a clinic complaining that his vision had become tinted red in both eyes and that it had not gone away for two days.

His problems started soon after he took a high dose of liquid sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra, which he had gotten off the internet.

Sildenafil citrate had previously been linked with color vision disturbances, but these had often self-corrected within 24 hours.

The scientists involved in the new study tried for more than one year to repair the man’s retina, without any success.

When examining his retina with state-of-the-art technology, they were able to see physical damage at the cellular level that was similar to retinal diseases, like retinitis pigmentosa and cone-rod dystrophy.

Both of these diseases can cause complete blindness, as they would wipe out the cells that perceive light and those that perceive color.

Now, it is important to remember that this man did not take the physical Viagra pill, but its active ingredient in liquid form. Furthermore, he did not take the recommended dose, but a rather large overdose.

However, as the researchers warned, people often think that a lot of something might work if a little of it fails to work which often steers people into administering a drug overdose.
