These Blood Pressure Drugs Cause Cancer

High blood pressure is the number one most prolific health problem in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

Leaving it untreated or unmanaged can, and routinely does, lead to a litany of devastating—but preventable—diseases. But what do you do when the treatment causes bigger problems than leaving something untreated?

This is the focus of today’s article, where we will look at new research that shows how certain blood pressure drugs cause cancer.

In a study out of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, findings linking drugs for high blood pressure to cancer were released in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

In the study, scientists followed the health of postmenopausal women who were taking calcium channel blockers (CCAs) to treat hypertension. What they found was that women who take this type of blood pressure drug were more than two and a half times more likely to develop both invasive ductal and invasive lobular carcinomas, together comprising 90% of all types of breast cancers.

What’s more troubling is that doctors are still prescribing this type of medication to postmenopausal women even though they are at a highly increased risk of developing osteoarthritis and calcium supplements are contraindicated with CCAs.

As well, women who are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have a 50% chance of developing breast cancer anyway, according to the National Institutes of Health.

The study showed an elevated risk of developing breast cancer with other commonly prescribed blood pressure medications like diuretics, ACE inhibitors and beta blockers, too.

Studies like the one out of the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center are few and far between, leaving the need for additional studies on medications and their cancer risks for men as a high priority.
