Many people don’t respond to blood pressure medication. In fact, many take three or more different blood pressure drugs without much success.
You cannot take three drugs without experiencing side effects; however, side effects are virtually guaranteed.
But now, scientists at Georgetown University Interventional Cardiology have discovered a weird therapy that can drop high blood pressure from outside the body while you just lie and relax in a clinic. This is not science fiction; it is real.
High blood pressure has turned out to be surprisingly treatment resistant, especially for those with a reading above 160/110. It is also deadly, of course, which creates an urgent need for a treatment that actually works.
A new treatment is now being tested that may be effective, safe, and non-traumatic for the patient. To understand how it works and differs from existing treatments, a simple explanation of the mechanism behind high blood pressure is needed.
All people with high blood pressure have excessive amounts of two hormones circulating around their bodies. These hormones are norepinephrine and epinephrine, your body’s primary stress hormones. They are called the stress hormones because your body produces extreme amounts of them when you are psychologically or physically stressed.
Psychological stress ranges from anger, to fear, to grief. Your body undergoes physical stress when you exercise, when you skip on sleep to finish your heavy workload, when your immune system fights off a virus, when you eat too much or too little of some essential nutrient, and so forth. Even those people who are exceptionally good at regulating their emotions have permanent physical stress.
Norepinephrine and epinephrine are responsible for raising your blood pressure in response to stress. Up to now, the most effective blood pressure treatments have focused on controlling these hormones. The new treatment is no exception, but it tries to control them in a novel way.
One of the most dangerous classes of blood pressure drug – Beta blockers – block your nerves from taking up norepinephrine and epinephrine, which means that they cannot have any effect on your body. They cannot be transported through your bloodstream, so they cannot raise your blood pressure.
These are the most ‘effective’ blood pressure drugs. Patients have up to recently had no other options when they failed.
In the past three years, scientists have been working on treatments that prevent the stress hormones from being secreted. Unlike beta blocker medications, these treatments do not merely prevent the effects of these hormones on your body, they actually prevent your body from producing them altogether.
Since the stress hormones are produced by your adrenal glands in response to sympathetic nervous system activity in your renal arteries, new treatments try to shut down the nerves in your renal arteries. A drug can obviously not accomplish this nerve shut-down, as no drug currently exists that can distinguish sufficiently between sympathetic nerves in your renal arteries and sympathetic nerves elsewhere in your body. You don’t want to disable yourself completely while getting rid of your high blood pressure!
The first attempt at such a treatment has been found to be relatively effective and relatively risk-free. Under local anesthetic, doctors insert a tiny catheter in your renal arteries that emit electromagnetic waves and aim them at the nerves in its immediate vicinity.
Scientists have now discovered that they can aim those same waves at the sympathetic nerves in the renal arteries with great accuracy from outside the body through the skin. You lie on your back on a table in a clinic while doctors apply the beams to your back where your adrenal glands are situated. The treatment lasts for an hour and must be repeated periodically to stop the nerves from becoming active again. It is currently being tested across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
Nothing is expected of the patient other than lying and resting for an hour while the beams do their work. It’s painless, stress-free and far preferable to struggling with multiple drugs that have side effects and/or fail to work properly.
But it’s not natural. And no implant or procedure like this comes without a risk.
Better is to tackle the issue from the source. Our easy blood pressure exercises reduce stress hormone production in your body, therefore lower your blood pressure naturally.
Its going to be great to see the that treatment i am sure it will do a perfect work
