Of the thousands of different herbal formulas sold for enlarged prostate, there is actually one that works.
That is according to a new study in the latest American Journal of Clinical and Experimental Urology.
Best of all, you can find this herb in all health food stores and even supermarkets.
Among the herbal supplements that men tend to take for enlarged prostate, products containing saw palmetto extract are the most popular. Saw palmetto is particularly rich in a compound called beta-sitosterol, a type of plant sterol with a similar structure to cholesterol, except that it’s healthy.
With these supplements being so sought-after and available over the counter, the authors of this study wanted to explore the effectiveness and potential uses of beta-sitosterol in maintaining prostate health and treating conditions like prostate cancer, enlarged prostate, and the urinary symptoms caused by them.
They consulted the already-published literature and discovered that beta-sitosterol, especially at the concentration found in saw palmetto extract, is both effective and safe.
Let’s have a look at their findings.
-
1. Beta-sitosterol works in a similar way to some enlarged prostate medications. It inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that can contribute to prostate growth.
2. Men taking these supplements enjoy a stronger urinary flow, better controlled urgency, and fewer other symptoms of enlarged prostate.
3. Some trials found beta-sitosterol to be effective, while others did not. This either means that it works on some people and not others, or that supplements differ in quality.
4. On average, beta-sitosterol works well in younger men with mild or moderate symptoms, but not in men with severe symptoms.
5. Prostate cancer cells treated with beta-sitosterol are less likely to invade other tissues and show increased signs of cell death, but not at concentrations that humans can consume by mouth.
6. The existing studies found these supplements to be safe and free of irritating side effects.
If you have found saw palmetto or beta-sitosterol supplements not to be effective enough on their own, you can also boost them with food sources rich in this plant sterol.
Try any of the below foods to assist your supplement.
-
1. Nuts and seeds like pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, pistachios, walnuts, almonds, and sesame seeds.
2. Avocados, olives, eggplant, and Brussels sprouts.
3. Soybeans, lentils, chickpeas, and kidney beans.
These sources almost certainly don’t contain enough beta-sitosterol to beat enlarged prostate on their own, but they constitute a healthy diet and may help your saw palmetto extract work better.
