How ED Saves Men’s LivesYou would think there is nothing good about ED.

In a way you’d be right.

And in a way you’d be wrong.

Because a new study published in Cardiology Research and Practice reveals that ED could actually save your life. But only if you ask “WHY”?

CAD is a condition in which your blood vessels are blocked or have become narrowed by cholesterol, blood clots, or other damage.

Because it is often symptom-free until it is very serious, researchers are always on the lookout for alternative ways to diagnose it early.

The Iranian authors of this study propose that ED could provide this early diagnosis.

They recruited 200 subjects from a clinic who suffered from stable angina (brief episodes of pain, squeezing, pressure, or tightness in the chest). Of these, a coronary angiography showed that 100 had CAD and 100 were CAD-free.

They gave all 200 subjects the standard International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire to assess their sexual function over the previous four weeks.

With their subjects’ CAD statuses and sexual function scores at hand, the researchers could check whether there was a relationship between CAD and ED.

While all the subjects were between the ages of 40 and 65, the group with CAD was older.

They discovered the following:

1. Their hypothesis was right. Those with low sexual function scores were substantially more likely to have CAD than those with higher scores.

2. The severity of ED was closely related to the severity of CAD. Those with the most severe ED had four or more blocked arteries compared with the one or two blocked arteries of those with less severe ED.

They concluded that the IIEF questionnaire displayed a sensitivity of 55 percent and a specificity of 87 percent.

This means that it could correctly identify 55 percent of CAD sufferers and correctly label 87 percent of those without CAD.

The ability to correctly diagnose 55 percent of CAD cases with a questionnaire is an amazing finding, since CAD can otherwise be diagnosed only with a coronary angiography, which is stressful and expensive and requires a cardiologist to perform.

Typically, a coronary angiography requires a catheter tube to be inserted into your blood vessels while you are tranquilized or anesthetized. A contrast dye is then injected into the vessels that indicates blocked versus open vessels on an x-ray.

Compared with this procedure, a sexual function questionnaire is so much simpler and cheaper.
