Francis Crick and James Watson created a huge breakthrough in the field of biotechnology by elucidating the double helical structure of DNA for which they won the Nobel Prize.
But the Nobel laureate, James Watson, has also proposed an important hypothesis regarding Type 2 Diabetes. And what Watson discovered is a more practical and beneficial way for you to tackle type 2 diabetes.
In fact, his simple, free approach can begin to turn the tide as soon as today.
Type 2 Diabetes is generally attributed to an inflammation of pancreatic tissue caused by an excess of intracellular oxidation caused by reactive oxygen species, also referred to as ROS. The proper functioning of the cells in the pancreatic tissue is responsible for regulating the blood sugar levels.
However, James Watson proposes that it might not be an excess, but rather a lack of sufficient amount of biological oxidants that is responsible for Type 2 Diabetes, cancer, dementia and cardiovascular disease.
Watson’s proposition arises from the fact that physicians often recommend that exercise is the best bet for controlling blood sugar. His chief interest was to identify how exercise benefits people with diabetes. He suggested that it had to do with two reactions that constantly occur within the body – oxidation and reduction.
These reactions result in the production of oxidants as well as anti-oxidants and usually they are maintained in balanced levels, because both types are essential for the effective functioning of the body.
Now take physical exercise for example. It helps in producing large quantities of oxidants in the body. These oxidants, especially hydrogen peroxide in oxidized form is necessary for forming the disulfide bridges in proteins which in turn is necessary for the proper folding of proteins. In other words, when there are not enough oxidants in the body, protein folding is disrupted and it is the improperly folded proteins which are responsible for inflammation of the pancreas.
The main message offered by Watson for controlling blood sugar levels is simple and straightforward – EXERCISE!
Exercise regularly and whenever you can. It is important that we grasp the importance of exercise for overall wellbeing and fitness.
When I had to quickly find a natural solution for my mother’s Type 2 Diabetes, Watson’s approach was one very important factor. But exercise alone is not going to completely reverse type 2 diabetes.
Grapes are full of sugar, fructose being the name of sugars that fruit produces, because fructose does not stimulate insulin secretion from the pancreas as does glucose-containing carbohydrate foods like bread and pasta, people who know this believe that fruit must be healthier. But there is a snag, our bodies produce a hormone called 'leptin' which controls weight gain: the more leptin produced the less weight is put on.The production of leptin is regulated by insulin responses to meals. Thus fructose, by reducing insulin, also reduces circulating leptin concentrations.
Dr. Sharon Elliot and colleagues at the universities of California and Pennsylvania, say that the combined effects of insulin and lowered leptin in individuals who eat diets that are high in dietary fructose(fruits) could increase the likelihood of weight gain and associated conditions. In addition, they point out that fructose, compared with glucose, is preferentially metabolized to fat in the liver. In animal studies fructose has been shown to induce insulin resistance, impair glucose tolerance and raise blood levels of insulin and triglycerides, as well as raising blood pressure, although the figures are not so clear in humans. Nevertheless, there are human data that suggests that eating more fructose may be detrimental in terms of increased fat storage and body weight and the illnesses associated with the metabolic syndrome.
Sugars from whatever source generates insulin in the body, insulin being a hormone that can, in significant quantities cause huge disruption in the body leading to all kinds of problems. i.e, Diabetes is now a plague in the 'civilised 'world, and why, because most people live on mainly a carbohydrate diet, the Doctor will tell tham to eat more fruit and vegetables, but they are carbohydrates too, in fact they could be worse for diabetics. The best solution is to take away the need for the cells to put up resistance in the first place by giving insulin less of a job to do. As ALL dietary carbohydrates, whether it is bread, pasta, breakfast cereals, sugar or fruit, and whatever its glyceamic index, ultimately reaches the blood as glucose, the best way to reduce the need for increased insulin is to reduce dietary carbohydrate. And we also need to reduce our intakes of the cheap, engineered dietary oils and margarines. These two elements of our modern diet are a recipe for disaster.
The evidence of how bad our diet is; we have the sickest society ever known, plagued by a plethora of diseases, caused mainly by a greedy corporate mafia who sell the most poisonous foods to the masses.
Glut4 was discovered about 1990, as an additional mechanism to Glut3, for transporting glucose from the cell wall into the centre of the muscle cell. Glut4 responds to both insulin and exercise, and most papers report that the effect of exercise lasts as much as 3 days. In contrast, my blood-glucose rose when I did not exercise every day. I was short on protein intake, and was catabolising back proteins from my muscles in the night, including presumably the protein Glut4. Dr. Atkins recommended exercise and a high protein diet. But it still took 12 months before I could pass a glucose load test. So there must have been other mechanisms at work, perhaps the one suggested by Watson.

I really believe that he is on to something , because I use to be a very active person. But the day I started working indoors, leaving my active lifestyle, my health went downhill.
