It is said that music tames the savage heart, but researchers looking at patients in intensive care recently proved the adage to be true. But not just any music fits the bill.
Researchers looking at blood pressure and pain levels for patients in ICU recently found that playing a certain kind of music was very effective at lowering both.
The study out of the University of Arizona showed that a 10-minute harp performance didn’t just lower high blood pressure. It actually also brought up low blood pressure to normal levels.
One hundred participants were split into two groups. One was given 10-minute periods of quiet relaxation and the other was treated to the harp performances.
The participants in the harp group were found to have lower levels of pain than what they were reporting before the music, and their blood pressure was more stable than in the group without music.
The study’s publishers were quick to point out that music alone isn’t the factor that heals, but it does create the ideal environment to make healing progress more quickly, since normal blood pressure is such an important key in healing.
These easy exercises can normalize your blood pressure in as little as one day…
How wonderful!
awesome..=)
What a powerful gift by the Creator God.
I guess it's true that David played the HARP for King Saul to fight his demonic depression!
Were high/low blood pressure problems thought to be demons during that time in history? (along the lines of the way epilepsy was thought to be demonic posession in later cultures?)
Nice that science can now prove what's been in the bible for centuries. Do we know what harp music they were playing? I suppose it's like the Mozart effect.
would be great to know the effects of heavy rock music and gangster rap on teenagers. Parents could probably tell you but some evidence would be great.
I listen to many types of music and programs created purposely for relaxation and stress management; some of which manipulate the brain waves temporarily; I also practice different stress management techniques such as progressive relaxation, meditation, and create my own scenarious for stress management. I do still have high blood pressure. I have never found any harp music on stress management and relaxation CD’s.
Thanks for this information, Christian; Very interesting and you can bet I will be looking for harp music CD’s;) taylor
Thanks for bringing this important topic to us. Now a days with our sophisticated measuring instruments we could confirm what ‘The Nomads” have being saying for centuries.
I have to mention a great American scholar thinker Mark Hanson known world wide as Hamza Yusuf who is blessed with deep knowledge about the heart said in one of his lectures titled “What the Nomads Have to Teach Us” the following:
“In the Muslim world music is related to cosmology. Al Farabi has written the book Kitab al Music al Kabir (Big Music Book). The Book has 2000 pages.. Plato wanted to banish music from his academia. It is because of the danger the music can inflict on the soul. The impact it has on the souls and at the hands of somebody who does not know what he or she is doing, it can be manipulative. In the Muslim tradition the scholars separated the profane and sacred music. Many scholars have prohibited the profane music because it would have a bad impact on people. And they relate sacred music to cosmology. In Turkey there is a man who has a hospital where music therapy is used to cure. The therapy originated in Persia. In Arabic music there is a 24-note system as opposed to the twelve-note system in, say, Chinese or Ayurvedic system (related to twelve hours of the day, twelve organs of body ). In Andulusia, there were mental asylums where orchestra was used to treat the mad. The ancient musicians were master musicians and they based music on pulse and humeral theory.”.
How weird that a lot of our ‘ethereal friends’ are depicted with a harp……?!
Good reason for harp therapy!
I think the reverse is also true i.e. the way we feel inside determines what music we listen to and does us good. A young person who is feeling like striking out and NOT being like the parents (which is quite normal) will listen and perform music which might sound pretty screamey but it’s saying in no uncertain terms what this person feels inside…. expressing !!! As my daughter once said at 16, “You can’t play anything good on that (harp), Mum”.
From what I’ve read, people in pain have certain notes and ranges which irritate and ones which soothe. There are many people now quite versed in Harp Therapy and couses one can take. Cheryl
I would challenge notion that just a “Harp” is “The Music” to still the Savage Beast theory.
I think any form of music as long as it’s not the “Head Banger” kind will do the trick.
Flute, Harp, Crystal Bowls, Violin, even Electronic or Synthesised forms can be as restful as one would or could want.
Celtic sounds/music, even Kitaro (Japanese Musician) has released a great number of tracks/CD’s of this kind and for quiet restful listening one would be hard pressed to find anything better.
But I agree that “Melodic Sounds in Peaceful Surround” will still the savage beast, which in turn will reduce the highest blood pressure, it stands to reason…………?
Listening to harp music while watching a fish tank 🙂
I’ve played the harp for Providence Hospitals NICU for 11 years. The doctors say that it strengthens the heart, calms, and lowers pulse. It’s obvious when the alarms quit going off while I’m playing. The doctors say it lasts for 2 hours after I quit playing.
good news thanks.
Further to my comment of this morning, I could also recommend a site where one can obtain some very interesting chanting that also serves as meditation material it is Chanting by Hein Braat, if you look at http://www.heinbraat.com you can listen prior to buying his chants, these are something worth having, I listen regularly to his chants and they are extremely restful/peaceful…..?
Aloha from Hawaii Island, and thank you for bringing light to healing power of the harp.
I have been a healing harpist for more than four years, and I can validate what this article is saying. When I am playing for my clients, it takes between 10-20 minutes for the person to completely relax. The signs of deep relaxation including deep breathing, a more relaxed posture, and often sleeping.
The harp is especially relaxing because of the way it produces the sounds, and the length of time the sounds remain in the air. Because the harp produces pure tones, the body begins to emulate those tones and feel better. The physics of sound healing is a really interesting and rich topic.
I have produced a CD of relaxation harp music that is based on the seasons as outlined in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is available on my web site and also on Amazon, CDBaby, iTunes and other places. And I play in private practice for people in-person and long-distance by recording.
YES, this is so true – and we have played a CD featuring Harp-music for many years now, during our Sunday morning breakfast. It is just wonderful; and so calming.
great information
Where does one find good Harp Music and by whom, is there any Christian Harp Music in Christian Book Stores or a website to go to?
I have played harp music at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio for over three years for patients and visitors. I find many cultures represented so vary my music to fit them. Always peaceful, soothing music. Irish, Welsh, country, classical, familiar songs (quiet), whatever fits the occasion. I also encourage other harpists to do the same. Some are already regulars at nursing and retirement homes It brings many thankful comments and makes me feel good as well. Benefits are very real for patients, visitors and hospital staff too. I hear from all. DS
