Another urgent reason to get cholesterol under control has been gaining attention in Alzheimer’s circles lately as scientists are finally discovering what the connection is.
Scientists and researchers have long suspected that people with high cholesterol levels are at higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, but the connection as to why has eluded them until recently.
Cholesterol is critical in the body for being able to absorb and make use of critical fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K.
However, bad cholesterol levels that are too high cause a cascade of problems all over the body as well, even in the brain.
Scientists found that one of the toxic proteins involved in clumps that damage nerve cells in the brain that cause Alzheimer’s symptoms actually bind to cholesterol, which carries it to the brain.
While there are more pieces to the mystery behind triggers and a cure, researchers were very encouraged by finding this critical relationship.

Are you stupid, lower cholesterol causes Alzheimer's. In fact, cholesterol.
below 200 increases chances of stroke or heart attack. doctor's told my mother to get her cholesterol below 200 and she died from Alzheimer's.
That is extremely vague.
Which cholesterol are these researchers on about?
Low cholesterol actually causes Pattern B LDL cholesterol which can get into artery walls and start plaque build up.
Eating eggs will mitigate against this type of LDL cholesterol as the cholesterol in eggs supplements the lack of cholesterol in the blood. Pattern A LDL cholesterol is a good one, as is HDL cholesterol.
So what are these people saying? That good cholesterol is bad?
What’s bad for dementia is seed [polyunsaturated] oils which are unstable at room and body temperature. They overwhelm the body’s antioxidant defences. Hence the epidemic health problems we see today.
Hi
Please do not pass on medical establishment surveys as valid findings. Medical researchers’ publish contradictory findings. One day it is bad the next time it is good. We heard good cholesterol was good and recently that it was not so good. My advice is healthy, do exercise mostly walking and eat a balanced diet.
Day by day researchers finding the dagerous of nasty bad cherostrol.
I agree, Millie. Too LOW cholesterol causes Alzheimer's. All the statin drugs CAUSE Alzheimers. I don't think I can trust this newsletter anymore.
This is Charlies' comment
Are you kidding? The brain is 90+% cholesterol. It needs it. That is why breast milk is full of it. Folks get put on low cholesterol diets and guess what? They develop Alzheimer's! Big Pharma promotes this, they target retirees into believing they can't live without these expensive drugs. Of course, they encourage a slow death with the meds, they want to get all your money before you expire.
There is a less discussed "bad" cholesterol which is LDL that has been oxidized and my studies say those are the actual bad guys, not healthy LDL. My studies have revealed that the popular data on risk were not truthful honest control tests and basically indicate that total of 200 is meaningless. Much more scientific evaluations are being written about the level of blood triglycerides in ratio to the HDL cholesterol which is the flowing agent to make sure LDL get back to the liver for processing as intended. A good efficient human body will run on fat fuel burning and triglycerides will be low (60 to 100). The body gets 9 calories versus 4 from Fat versus Carbs or Protein so too much free roaming fat in the blood (Triglycerides) means the blood still has overload of sugar to burn. All this is saying the Cholesterol count is a Big Fat "don't care". If you have highly oxidized LDL rummaging for trouble you care. If your HDL is too low to bring LDL back to the liver you care. If Triglycerides are very high you care that fats have no place to go anymore as you are not burning it for energy and your fat cells are all plugged up. So these smart people found out that people who have that problem plus low HDL had the highest heart attack prone issues. They invented the ratio Triglyc/HDL to make it easy to identify "who really" is in serious risk–nothing about the LDL count or total Cholesterol count means squat. And by the way, you know the remark that someone doesn't do squat? – well, try doing squat in sets of 10 with weights on your back. That will burn triglycerides and build HDL levels. So Doing Squat will whack any risk of cholesterol level BS.
We have got good results with reversal of some alzeimers behaviours using daily coconut oil as part of the diet(see Dr Mary Newport -coconut oil and dementia) with my mother, and various acquantances. One friend of 89 years had no dementia but after 3 weeks using coconut oil found his mobility very much improved. He became steadier on his feet and didn't need his stick to go walking. I am not a medical person but am seeing encouraging changes. I am on it myself and my memory, weight and cholesterol have improved.
Way back in 1996 when my father was 100 years young, he and my eldest sister went into town and had a health check. The following week they received a phone call from the nurse? who was delivering the findings of the Blood Cholesterol tests, she was extremely concerned that my father “The Centenarian” had such a high cholesterol reading……? and insisted he attend the clinic post haste to receive medication for his cholesterol. When informed of the problem he said what are they going to do, give me some drugs to finish me off “NO THANKS”.
He lived on for another five years and was as bright as a new brass button, his favourite daily pass time was the crossword puzzle and the Sudoku which he always completed in double quick time. So what is the moral of this story, the medical profession isn’t always right with its findings, father used to eat all the wrong things according to “The Experts”, he loved the fat from the meat and above all the dripping left after roasting the Sunday Joint of Beef, he would have that every morning for smoko (Morning Tea) spread on thick slices of bread. His other favourite was a big mug of strong tea in which he would add at least four spoons of white sugar and not just one mug of tea a day but more like six or eight.
I guess if he really looked after himself with all the healthy stuff he might still be with us today, but as I sat by his bedside while he was actually dying and knowing he was about to go over he said “don’t cry over me I’ve had a good life, I’m tired and looking forward to a long sleep”. Fifteen minutes later he let go of my hand and he was gone………?
Dr. Mercola has some interesting facts about cholesterol and its mismanagement by the medical community. Go to:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/newsletter/newsLetter-archive.aspx and take a look at a few articles on cholesterol. Humans developed the brains they have today because of eating organ meats and fats. Atherosclerosis is caused by not getting enough vitamin C. You find cholesterol in atherosclerotic plaque because it is the last line of defense trying to heal arteries. You could say it’s a form of malnutrition. Gorillas, very much like humans, have heart attacks; they were dropping like flies in zoos until the nutritionists discovered they needed vitamin C. And now high cholesterol causes alzheimer’s? Give me a break. Why do you think the toxic proteins are binding to cholesterol? The last line of defense…just look at the nutrition of the average senior. Some of your other respondents hit the nail right on the head. We wouldn’t be seeing this kind of article in the first place if the scientific studies were not misleading about cholesterol and heart disease over 30 years ago. We are living with high-carb, low-fat diets and dying of diabetes and heart disease. Common sense would seem to indicate if that approach doesn’t work, do the opposite.
Very interesting article by Mr. Davis. The research shared with the reader was very vague and next to non-existent. Now we will see the medical establishment and Big Pharma drop the numbers once again. Soon everyone in the world will be encouraged to accept their cholesterol prescription. Can you say another medical “scam”!!!!!!! If you want to stay healthy (1) stay away from doctors; (2) stay out of hospitals; (3) take RESPONSIBILITY for your own health and well being.
I am disappointed in this information as it is contrary to much documentation. I don’t think I will be accepting this news letter any longer.
Cholesterol isn’t all bad. It’s an essential fat that provides support in the membranes of our bodies’ cells. Some cholesterol comes from diet and some is made by the liver. Cholesterol can’t dissolve in blood, so transport proteins carry it where it needs to go. These carriers are called lipoproteins, and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) is one member of the lipoprotein family.^^-`

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that a triglyceride level of 100 mg/dL (1.3 mmol/L) or lower is considered optimal. The AHA says this optimal level would improve your heart health. However, the AHA doesn’t recommend drug treatment to reach this level. Instead, for those trying to lower their triglycerides to this level, lifestyle changes such as diet, weight loss and physical activity are encouraged. Elevated triglycerides usually respond well to dietary and lifestyle changes. `-,-

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that’s found in the fats (lipids) in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease..’^^
