When I first heard people complaining about Genetically Modified Organisms or Food, I have to admit that I wasn’t quite sure what the problem was.
After all, we’ve been breeding animals as well as plants that better suited our needs for hundreds of years. Is there really any more danger with playing directly with the genes a little?
Quickly, however, when I began studying the subject a little better, I realized this was maybe the most dangerous step human race had ever taken. Not only may it be contributing to some of the major diseases of modern day, it might end up wiping out every human on earth.
The worst part is, once the process has started, it’s really hard to reverse it. And if we don’t do anything soon, we will get to a point of no return.
If you’re in any doubt about the danger of Genetically Modified Food (or even if you’re not), you must read today’s feature article and then make your comment at the end.
I’m going to begin by putting you in a strange situation. Imagine if a stranger you’d never met before asked you to put on a blindfold and then eat whatever he handed to you. Without having any idea what it was.
You would never agree to this, would you?
Let’s take the example ever further. Now you may have a food allergy, so you’d tell him that you couldn’t eat anything with that ingredient. He might reply that whatever he was going to feed you might have been made using exactly what you were allergic to but he’s quite sure (85% at least) there is no, or very little, trace left.
At this point you’d probably run away and call the police on this shady character.
But this is exactly what the food industry is doing. They’ve created all kinds of meat and vegetable products using genetic modifications. And with that, forget about reading the ingredients. First of all, they don’t have to tell you the ingredient was modified. Second, they could have used pretty much anything to modify the food and don’t have to disclose that.
Genetically Modified Organisms are created using a complicated process where genes from one organism are used to replace a single gene in another organism. You could, for example, use gene from a fish to replace a gene in soybeans. It doesn’t take a scientist to figure out this would never happen naturally and therefore, this process is completely unnatural.
Since you’ve no idea what kind of gene was used to modify your food, you may have an allergy for the injected ingredient (fish, peanuts etc). And although the effects may not be as severe as if you directly ate whatever you were allergic to, it may still affect you to some degree.
If the natural health component isn’t enough to get your attention, how about just sheer freakiness- pigs have been genetically modified to produce Omega 3 fats using a gene from roundworms. Is that really what you want to put in your mouth? What are you really eating?
Scientists have claimed that the modified genes are destroyed during the digestion process; however, recent studies have found those genes in the brains of infant mice fed GMO modified food.
Which brings us to the biggest issue on the dinner table… there is so little research on the long term effects of GMO. It’s only been on the market for less than 20 years. And during those 20 years there has been a drastic rise in all kinds of modern diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity etc. Now we don’t know for sure if GMO is causing this but it has all been happening at the same time. And since there is no labeling requirement, it’s very tough to even compare people who eat more or less GMO.
And it’s in everything. Over 90% of all corn, soybeans, cotton seed oil, canola oil and cane sugar sold in the USA is genetically modified. The percentage is much lower in other countries around the world. No surprise USA also has the highest frequency of most of those modern health problems.
Oftentimes the effects of modified food are discovered only by coincidence when odd occurrences happen. For example, cows fed partly genetically altered soybeans were found to produce milk with a higher fat content. Ladybugs in Scotland lived half the age of other ladybugs when around genetically modified potatoes. They also laid fewer eggs. What’s more, the ladybugs don’t even eat potatoes. They ate insects that had eaten the modified potatoes. So the effects clearly go down the food chain.
That brings us to pesticides. Did you know that most of the GMO done today is meant to keep insects away from crops?
First of all, insects are pretty smart and know the good stuff. Do you really want to eat something not even insects want to eat? Because now whatever is meant to keep the insects away is inside the plant forever and never washes away.
Second, little by little, the insects are going to adapt so that they can live (because food supply is changing they have to). At that point they may become immune to those changing efforts and more powerful, poisoning pesticides in addition to GMO are then needed, causing an ugly cycle. At its worst, this trend can even cause a food shortage in the long haul.
Now there is a far-fetched possibility that genetically altered food is just as safe as any other type of food. Maybe there is nothing to worry about. But we just don’t know. And because the FDA refuses to require labeling of modified food, we don’t have much choice.
Even in your local health food store, things labeled “all natural” might still contain ingredients that are genetically modified. Unfortunately, this is actually more likely than not.
The only products we can be pretty sure are not GMO are products labeled 100% organic. And even with that, we can’t be too sure for too long.
You see, crops don’t grow in isolation. It’s very possible that seed from GMO farms blow over to organic farms and pollute the crops. And there is no way to know and nothing really to do about it except grow the organic crop in more and more isolation.
Genetically modified salmon is also being raised inland in various places around the world- as if the traditional commercially-raised salmon wasn’t enough risk. These genetically modified fish are bigger than traditional salmon so if a few of them escaped into the wild, they’d be considered superior breeding mates. At that point, organic has been pretty much adulterated.
The worst part is there is no need for GMO. There is plenty of food in the world. Even continents where people are starving often have a lot of food. The bigger problem is getting the food to the people who need it. The only reason for making GMO is for the few big food manufactures to become bigger and richer at the risk of our health.

Its surprising the governments across the world are not bothered about this!! I think this might be true for events where cause-effect phenomena is a long wind.For us in India,few are concerned with GMO. The fact that we spoil our health to insatiable greed of corporates is unacceptable.
You Make a good case for Regulation,all inclusive Labeling and a compinsation Fund contributed to by those who introduce GMO’s to the enviroment. ie. Hardy’s & Asbestos.
I’m totally against GMO’s because all the vitamin and nutrients are wiped out, so we’d be eating just fibre and nothing else. Man is trying trump God by showing that he can improve on the original species. A lot of people are ignorant about what genetically modified organisims really are and how their health will be affected.
Don’t try to prevent GMO, by telling people horrorstories abut genes from roundworms placed in GMO’s . From a scientific point of view it is completely the same if it was another sort of genes. You displays your intensions as being a matter of scaring people more than to inform them . And what is needed is objective information and not propaganda. In my opinion you mix the two things and thereby do more harm than good.

I recommend anybody interested in this subject read Joel Salatin’s, “Folks, This Ain’t Normal”, subtitled, “A Farmer’s Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World”.
He describes how even if you put a moth and a tomato in a room for years, burn incense and play romantic music, that moth and that tomato are NEVER going to make it. Yet “making it” is what genetic modification does between such genetic strangers as moths and tomatoes. It’s a monumental change in agriculture that simply has never been properly tested. There hasn’t been enough time to evaluate the effects.

Case for eating what we grow.
I have always been againts genetically modified foods. Monsanto Chemicals produced an oil for use in transformers,which was banned in the UK because it caused cancer and could not be burnt. They are now producing GM food.
Unfortunately it is all about making money at any cost. In the 40s the cigarete industry used adverts that led people to belive smoking was good for you they even employed scientists and doctors to carry out test the results of which were never published totally only any good results.

Most of the seed companies are owned by Monsanto and are genetically altered. It's difficult to find good organic seeds now.
The GMO process is heading toward monocultures in food stuffs and we know what happened in Ireland when all the potatoes were the same breed. It is a prescription for disaster but after all Monsanto has to make a buck.
I think it is a shame that we the people cave in to the GMO and let it become a problem to our health if we refused to eat it then they would go out of buisness
GMO foods have got to be labeled so we have a choice whether to eat them or not. I personally do not want to eat GMO foods. In November vote yes to labeling our food in CA. This is so important for your health, your families, and future generations.
I'm not convinced by this article. Man has modified plants for thousands of years with corn as the most well known. The current selection of hybrids that we now enjoy the fruits of in increased production, disease resistance and nutrient value. The atom bomb can destroy the human race or produce nuclear energy and be used in cancer treatment. This article is another example of pseudo scientific hysteria.
President Obama has appointed 4 ex Monsanto big shots to the FDA, The dept of Agriculture and some other positions. These people were the top dogs of GMO’s. He is in the pocket of Monsanto and is their puppet. Obama is a major obstacle in getting GMO’s labeled and exposed!

I’ve been following the GMO agenda for years now and consider GMO foods and seeds pure poison for the planet, for our health and for our minds.
As much as I’d like to be able to afford by all organic fruits and vegetables, I can’t afford it. Nor can I afford grass fed beef and pastured chicken. But that doesn’t mean I choose to eat GMO foods.
I want the labeling laws enacted so I once again can exercise my God-given right to freely choose what to put in my mouth!

What a travesty of events. Monsanto, Novartis, Dupont, Dow, Aventis, to name but a few, are really screwing with life as we know it. Monsanto and some of the abovementioned already own most of the seed repositories and thus force farmers to buy their inferior GM crap. Yes it is about money, and also total and complete control of the food industry. Not only is the main purpose thus far for gm to make crops ‘Roundup ready’ (resistant to Monsanto’s Roundup TM), (much more toxic-up to 100 times more pesticide), but they have also coveniantly inserted ‘growth lock genes’ so that now the farmer not only needs fertilizer and water to grow his crop, but also a patented ‘growth enabling compound’, without which, nothing can be grown, and of course at a substantial cost to the farmer, and hence the consumer – to say nothing of the inherent detriment to the health of the consumer and in the long run the very eco system that sustains all life. Shame!!
This long time practice of some people playing God could indeed bring mankind to an end. This issue boils down again to the theory of conspiracy by food manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, doctors, hospitals and drug stores whose main objective is to keep us all unhealthy and sick to maintain their lucrative business. Hybrids are still nature's way to control – either it succeeds or not. Deliberately taking obscure genes from one thing to plant it in a totally unrelated another thing is something very different, uneeded and a product of ego and greed. I do not want to consume something I have no odea what it is made of and that even bugs will not come near. And by the way – Radiation and chemo kill cancer patients, it does not heal them. WHETHER THE creator CREATED or the life evolved to the present level a very long process of segregation and selection and stabilization where man just selected the best available and cultivated as he himself evolved. We need to educate everyone about the laws that are contained in the Bible. As long as mankind rejects the teachings of the Almighty, we will continue to suffer for our disobedience. The scientists are going against the natural laws of God, and are going by their head knowledge. They think they are right and are doing good, but that is not the case. So, we who are well versed in the natural laws of God have a responsibility to educate the scientists. The problem with this is that we keep too quiet about the knowledge that God has given us. Now, cross breeding plants of a different type in the same genre is not gene splicing as it is done today. That is the rub. It is out of order and does cause problems. natural cross breeding within a species is not uncommon or un-natural! Big pharma is doing what the creator has said not to do. so they do and it causes great harm an un-natural hybrids out of order and sync with the original design with natural varients. It simply is out of sync woth the Creator.

The more frightening situation is that the third world countries have become the dumbing grounds to test most of the foods; usually with the slogan: After all, they will still die of hunger if they don’t get this ‘free’ food. To curb this evil menace, there must be concerted advocacy effort to make people aware of the danger in GMO/GMF; and possibly raising the issue with the WHO, even though the big players will do everything, including using their money to lobby. Hi Nelson…I come down firmly on all sides and with a great deal of confusion! I know about corruption and greed has replaced profit. I know that a totaaly organic earth would work…but it won't make anyone rich.
We can buy organic…if it isn't well sealed the Supermarkets spray it all down with that "stay fresh" poison. So then I go for frozen. Are we doomed…is it too late.

Here is some objective information that alone condemns GMO utterly in my mind: African farmers who buy seed from Monsanto find that they have become victims of a very bad deal indeed. They used to buy natural seed and keep some of it back for planting the following year. You cannot do that with GM seed, and the unfortunate farmers have no alternative but to buy all their seed anew each year. Result: more profit for filthy rich Monsanto, more impoverishment for the already poor farmers. If President Obama supports this graft and greed, he should change parties.
California is an agricultural state. People in this state should with open eyes and ears should learn and be educated the bad effect of GMO foods. There is real truth and should dig deeper why and why not GMO foods should be totally prohebited for consumption. This is the biggest American Greed to be exposed as it envolves the intellectuals(scientist) who are pretending to help solve the scarcity of food in a growing population of the world. I’ve researched this many times and what you have written is true. It’s a crying shame that those that are suppose to make sure we stay healthy are the very ones that don’t really care. To me, this is a crime and those that are doing this should be locked up. Corruption seems to surround our country now and these people really think nothing is ever going to touch them, but there is a living God that says otherwise. By what God says, if they don’t ask for forgiveness and change, I feel what is coming for such people isn’t going to be pretty. There is a hope for them, but if they don’t even care for their neighbor…then there is no hope [ for them ].
We as a nation and a seed of Abraham have brought this on ourselves, pushing God out, being immoral, corrupt, etc. We all need to turn our lives back to God and He will help us.It really is that simple.

Now I just discovered that the sugar I use for my tea and lemonade
is tainted! And I consume these drinks on a regular basis.
It really galls me that these corporate producers of everyday foods
couldn’t care less about the consumers. Profit is their god. Nothing
else matters.
Besides this dilemma, I discovered to my horror that the “healthy” raw
spinach I consumed regularly was loaded with carcinogenic pesticides!
I quit eating it immediately. I have actually lost my appetite and
don’t really eat much at all.
If these GMO foods are responsible for contributing to poor health now
I would think it’s only going to get worse over time as the Big Guys
continue to play God with our food supply.

You need to more research if you not see how bad this is and we are not going to be able to undo what they have done. Blame Monsanto for most of the cancer and other disease.

Our food is tainted & “changed”; our water is all contaminated; the seeds are already “changed”; medications don’t help illnesses; the weather has gone to hell; our money value is decreasing; no one can afford gold; autos are sky high; houses higher; even higher to own; gasoline, which I bought for 20 cents a gallon, is outa sight, likely to go higher; our president is happy! This is a capatolist nation! So, where are my choices, if these things are being done without “we the people, making the choices? “THEY” are going to do as they please, regardless! I already felt hopeless, helpless and depressed, before this article. I did my thinking about GMO years ago. I thought “we” might have a choice in the matter. “It” has all been done for a long time, apparently, without too many people looking ahead far enough. They finely found several uses for kudzu, but GMO, and insect or critter dna in our brain cells; I think “they” oughta have to experience their GMO nightmare themselves, before letting it out all over the world. We have know the USA was going to Hell, for a long, long time, but some of the countries might have been a little more careful than the people making these decisions in the U.S. I’m a little hot under the collar right now.
What I really cannot understand is arent the evil, greedy groups

The progress man made in acquiring knowledge is not in tandem with his acquiring wisdom and discernment of right from wrong. Man is blinded and driven by pride, greed and lust for power and money with total disregard for the good of his fellow men. What man has done in producing GMOs is in violation of God’s command found in the Bible in Leviticus chapter 19 verse 19 “Keep my decrees. Do not mate different kinds of animals…” God, our Creator, is personally happy with His work. Who is man to dispute this and think he can do better? Aren’t some of the tragic consequences that we have seen enough to prove that man is wrong?

Often people who say the can’t afford to eat organic drink too much alcohol, buy expensive games and toy for their children, have large TVs, wear designer clothes and jewellery, eat fast foods,……I could go on.
If you make health and happiness a priority then sometimes even those who think they can’t afford to eat organic can. Making bread with my husband turns out to be fun …..and strangely bonding. Cooking from scratch with the kids is rewarding and so is growing food amongst the flowers in our garden. There are some beautiful vegetables and small fruit tree available now that provide flavour and something to admire.
I am fully aware that some of us are truely not able to afford to eat organic and for them legislation regarding GM foods is a must.
And to those who say that mixing a roundworm gene with pig gene is the same as dusting one flower with the pollen from another……..get a life!
Caveman survived very well thank you. If he hadn’t, we would not be here. He did it on the food available without the need for sugar, preservatives, additives, colours, gma food and animals and DOCTORS. It is a simple as that.

The people who make the GMO’s are very clever — maybe too clever. I am convinced that far more and longer testing is in order before such products are allowed on the market. Too many dangers are becoming associated with these strange products.
