Would you trust a person to cure your type 2 diabetes who recommended heavily processed meat, used butter, sugar and fat in all foods and then deep-fried the whole thing? Then, this person developed type 2 diabetes herself, kept it a secret for three years and still didn’t change her food promotions.
Is this someone you’d take health recommendations from? Well, that’s what one of the biggest type 2 diabetes drug brands, Victoza, wants you to do.
In today’s feature article we’ll take an example of Paula Deen’s case of type 2 diabetes and then tell you about four other celebrates who developed type 2 diabetes but took the right actions and now manage or have even completely reversed their diabetes naturally.
Paula is not someone I’d call a major celebrity. She created cookbooks, including what she called, “traditional southern recipes.” Her attitude has been “eat whatever makes you happy.” This landed her quite a few interviews and finally her own cooking show.
For three years after she knew about her diabetes, she kept it a secret while promoting her deadly diet in even more vicious ways than ever. Meanwhile, her agents landed her a contract with Victoza, which is even more dangerous than the diet Paula promotes.
Here is what Victoza says about their own drug:
“In animal studies, Victoza® caused thyroid tumors—including thyroid cancer—in some rats and mice. It is not known whether Victoza® causes thyroid tumors or a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) in people which may be fatal if not detected and treated early. While taking Victoza®, tell your doctor if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath. These may be symptoms of thyroid cancer.”
After announcing her diabetes, Paula has tried to establish herself as a diabetes expert. While still teaching the old recipes, she has a new site that includes “diabetes information.” Well, the information there is mostly misleading or plain wrong. And the main point of the site seems to be encouraging a diabetes sufferer to keep eating what you want and then take a pill that probably will give you cancer.
If you ask me, this is an example of a greedy, unethical minor celebrity who cares more about making money than the “fans” who trust her.
But there are other celebrities who have taken a different route. They’ve chosen to use their resources to find natural ways to overcome their disease -and they’ve succeeded. I hope they’ll be the examples you follow.
Lets look at some of them:
Halle Berry
This actress is probably the most unlikely person to develop type 2 diabetes. She’s slim, young and lived a pretty healthy lifestyle. In fact, she was first diagnosed with type1 diabetes (which is always considered to require insulin) but after she took the steps to cure herself, her doctors said she must have had type 2 diabetes because type 1 was incurable. Kind of strange logic if you ask me.
Randy Jackson
Being heavily obese with diabetes running in his family, his type 2 diabetes was not so surprising. African Americans are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. But by losing lots of weight (using bypass surgery, which I do not recommend), changing his diet around, developing a workout routine and more lifestyle changes, he has reversed most of his symptoms.
Mike Huckabee
Former Arkansas governor, former presidential candidate and current Fox news showman, shed 110 pounds after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He also became a runner and made other lifestyle changes. He’s now in a healthy weight range and has completely reversed his type 2 diabetes. Today, he heavily promotes a healthy lifestyle and uses his small celebrity status to do so. He has written a book about his health journey and how we should teach our children to live healthy from a young age.
Whether or not we agree with Huckabee’s political views, we can all agree with his basic philosophy, which Paula Deen would do well to remember, which is, “Do the right thing!”
Patti LaBelle
This songstress was in denial about her diabetes risk even if her mother died from the disease at age 58. Patti said she loved her “…twelve-egg potato salad, seven-cheese macaroni and all that stuff that I used to eat like crazy, I was hooked on fried chicken and pasta.”
But after passing out on stage, this legendary singer took a 360 degree turn. And not only did she change her own life, she used her celebrity status to promote healthier dieting and natural approaches to type 2 diabetes. She has written several cookbooks teaching people about delicious diabetes-friendly meals.
These are the kind of celebrities that set examples for what we can all do.
Former president Bill Clinton (who is another celebrity who has turned to healthy living) announced recently that diabetes is costing the USA alone about $160 billion a year and it will most likely affect one third of the whole population (men, women and children) by the middle of the century.
This is a horrible waste of money and lives, since, as the examples above show, type 2 diabetes is 100% reversible without using dangerous drugs (that can cause other serious conditions such as cancer). Just think about what we could do with an extra 160 billion dollars.
Fascinating stuff. I wonder which is most important, exercise or diet – though I suspect that they are just two sides of the same coin, working in concert. For insights into the role of exercise in addressing diabetes, see this site (no, the author didn't ask me to say this, I just like his focus on the exercise component of battling TIIDM) http://goo.gl/1MUBS. -k @FitOldDog
I don’t agree with Paula Deen’s diet, medication choices or cooking recipes. However this article is catty. There is no reason to criticize a persons accomplishments or overall status because you don’t agree with some of her actions.
Bill Clinton was no saint either. There is nothing natural about Randy Jackson’s by pass surgery either.
Per the dictionary the word celebrity means: a famous or well known person. If Paula wasn’t famous or well known you wouldn’t have used her name for this article to prove your point or for your own internet marketing.
We have all done things in our past we shouldn’t have done. No one is perfect. Not even the people at Blue Heron. But you do a good job helping people to be more healthy. Something I have done most of my life too after I became more educated.
Please keep to the high road.
Fascinating… Yes.
Hello :
If inflamation is the problem ??? How then do we get rid of the inflamation??
Bill Hamstra
I believe most diseases can be reversed or at the very least mitigated by a whole food diet, exercise and lifestyle changes. The body knows how to right itself. A good health coach can assist a person in finding what is right for that individual.
Paula Deen is just a person. She does not have to be who DM controllers want her to be. She is living her life, her way and enjoys cooking. She may or may not have developed diabetes related to her weight and diet. There are many ways to eat as a diabetic and eating butter, meat, and fat is fine if a diabetic chooses low carb. The biggest problem in our society is not the foods listed other than processed meats. Processed foods and way too much sugar in processed foods is by far the biggest culprit. Having a great dessert with sugar. Frying foods. Eating meats. Having dairy including butter. These are not the diabetic culprits. It is overeating and eating processed foods that harm.
Yes I agree that anyone who promotes a drug to control diabetes is not to be trusted. I was informed by my doctor that I was prediabete and I refuse to go on pills so I changed my way of eating. The trouble with this world that we are living in is, the love of money which is the devil's way instead of love which is God's way. What this world needs more than money is love sweet love and there would be less illness.
In Africa we bear the brunt of drugs promotion and this aggravates our conditions of health.
SWEET…..Pun intended GRIN.
Just trust and pray for your food before and after meals Right?
Yes I've watched Paula cook on food tv and it makes me sick just watching her. Diabetes was inevitable. It's no wonder there are so many fat Americans.
Victoza is a one dose daily injection not a pill. It did a great job with my blood sugar for a time, then I did develop a thyroid nodule but it has been checked and is not cancer. I too am a Southern Cook, but have many adaptations to Mama’s traditional recipes. I try to stay close to the earth will local fresh foods. Simple carbs are our enemy and need to limited in anyone with diabetis. When I stay on a macrobiotic diet my bllod sugars are perfect. Both my parents were type 11, and I have been in this battle for 13 years. My prayer for each of you on your journey is happiness and health. Always – Patsy Ann
can type 2 be cured by diet ? will pills help, any suggestions a new diabetec
My experience is that many people are secretive about being diabetic. I didn’t find out my Father in Law was type 2 till he went with my wife and I to my family MD; this visit, after I was diagnosed, was to start teaching me about type 2. I didn’t tell my own family for a couple of months. My sister-in-law didn’t mention her husband was type 2 until my wife told her about me; my brother in law changed the subject when I tried discussing this with me (I didn’t push the matter).
Diabetics is simply a subject that doesn’t normally come up. I was raised in the belief that talking about medical problems was a form of bragging and a way of asking for pity; both of which were frowned upon. A person extroverted enought to be on TV probably should have an easier time of admiting being a type 2.
If nothing else, Paula Deen could have started steering her recipies towards safer ingredients. If she like to focus on “southern cooking” (per another article) then she could easily find “safer” soutghern cooking recipies.
As for “Victoza® “, I simmply won’t take a drug so potentially dangerous. I prefer pills and would rather take insulin before this drug she advertises.
I read an article about her tho and she said she doesn't eat like that all the time…only once a week while filming. she said she would be as big as a house if she were eating like that all of the time.
I do everything naturally.Diabetic drugs almost killed me!
I have been peeping your site and encountered this pearl post. I have been struggling to live a all right lifestyle. Your article has been eye opening. This will assist me in my goal to be a healthy me.
