Ditching modern-day foods like pasta, bread and soda may be an underrated strategy for treating diabetes, a review published in the medical journal “Nutrition & Metabolism” reports.

The paper notes that modern-day Western diets –rich in carbohydrates and low in omega-3 fats— make cells insulin resistant. Improving insulin resistance is key for the management of diabetic blood sugar levels.

They note that type 2 diabetics that adopt a caveman diet that’s free of grains, dairy and processed foods but rich in fish, vegetables and fruits typically improve their blood sugar management significantly by boosting the body’s ability to process the hormone insulin.
