Living with diabetes can be hard enough, but for many, diabetic neuropathy makes it even worse.
If you need relief, a new study published in The Egyptian Journal of Neurology, Psychiatry and Neurosurgery suggests that adding 2000 IU of vitamin D per day can reduce your pain and improve your quality of life.
Researchers have known for years that people with diabetes often have low vitamin D levels, and that their neuropathy tends to get worse the lower their vitamin D levels fall.
But while we know vitamin D deficiency and diabetic nerve pain go hand in hand, very few studies have actually tested whether giving people vitamin D supplements could help.
This study took place in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and included 60 adults with diabetic neuropathy.
Since it would have been unethical to take the patients off their medication just for the sake of the study, all participants continued using standard neuropathy medications like gabapentin, pregabalin, or amitriptyline.
In addition, the researchers gave half of them 1000 IU of vitamin D twice a day (a total of 2000 IU daily). The study lasted eight weeks.
Researchers used a tool called the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) to measure changes in pain and its impact on sleep, daily activities, and mood.
A BPI score of 0 means a patient is suffering badly, while 100 means no pain-related problems.
At the end of the eight weeks, the group taking vitamin D improved more than those on standard treatment alone. Let’s look at the numbers:

1. Pain reduction was much better with vitamin D. People taking vitamin D saw their pain scores drop by an average of 3.37 points on a 10-point scale, compared to just 2.27 points in the group taking only regular medications.
2. Sleep quality improved dramatically. After eight weeks, people taking vitamin D scored 63.8 out of 100 for sleep quality, while those on regular treatment alone only scored 56.6.
3. Daily activities became much easier. The vitamin D group scored 61.4 out of 100 for their ability to do everyday tasks, compared to just 52.4 out of 100 in the control group.
4. Their mood rose significantly. People taking vitamin D felt much more positive, scoring 65.0 out of 100 for mood, compared to 54.2 out of 100 in the other group.
Keep in mind that both groups were taking medication for their neuropathy. But it’s clear from the results that adding 2000 IU of vitamin D daily provided significantly greater relief, improving nerve pain, sleep, mood, and daily function.
