So you’re standing in the bread aisle in your local supermarket, wondering if bread is bad for your osteoporosis or not.
A new study in Acta Alimentaria answers your question.
Turns out bread is very good for Osteoporosis – as long as you pick the right type (the wrong type will damage your bones greatly).
In fact, the right kind of bread was proven more effective than modern medications.
For many, gluten causes inflammation. And inflammation is bad news for bones—it speeds up bone breakdown. So, researchers wanted to see if ditching gluten could make a difference for those at risk of osteoporosis.
The scientists worked with 150 white male Wistar rats. To mimic osteoporosis in humans, they used steroids to trigger the condition in some of the rats.
Then, they divided the rats into five groups:
-
1. Healthy rats on a regular diet.
2. Rats with osteoporosis eating a regular diet.
3. Osteoporotic rats treated with zoledronic acid (a common osteoporosis medication).
4. Osteoporotic rats treated with zoledronic acid and gluten-free bread.
5. Osteoporotic rats eating only gluten-free bread.
The gluten-free bread wasn’t your typical grocery store loaf. It was made with a mix of amaranth flour, tigernut flour, apple powder, carrot powder, and soy protein isolate.
The researchers studied the rats’ health and bone structure to see which treatments worked best.
-
• Rats with osteoporosis on a regular diet had severe bone damage—they couldn’t even handle normal weight without fractures.
• Osteoporosis medication alone did little to protect their bone structure.
• Gluten-free bread made a big difference. Whether paired with the medication or used alone, it helped protect the rats’ bones from damage.
The takeaway? Gluten-free bread might just be the bone health booster we need—at least for rats. More research on humans is needed, but the findings are promising.
But these results are not about recommending gluten-free bread. It may help you or not. The real important finding of this study is that inflammation causes osteoporosis. And whatever you can do to reduce inflammation in your bones will help reverse this terrible condition.
