It´s well documented that exercising is extremely beneficial for people suffering neuropathy.
But which exercises are the most beneficial?
A new study published in Physiotherapy Research International put two common types of exercises to the test and revealed the best to help improve balance, reduce symptoms, and enhance the quality of life for people suffering neuropathy.
The researchers at the AIMS Diabetic Center specifically examined strength and balance training versus aerobic training to see which was more effective.
The study included men and women aged 40 to 80 with type 2 diabetes and significant nerve damage (a Toronto neuropathy score of six or higher). They excluded those with severe foot problems or other conditions that might affect their ability to participate.
Participants were randomly divided into two groups. One group did strength and balance training, and the other did aerobic training. Both groups exercised three times a week for eight weeks.
The researchers used several tools to measure outcomes, both before the program and at its end: the Toronto Clinical Neuropathy Score to assess neuropathy severity, the SF-36 survey to evaluate quality of life, and the Berg Balance Scale to measure balance.
After eight weeks of exercise, they analyzed the results and came to the following conclusions:
-
1. Both groups showed a significant improvement in their neuropathy symptoms, balance, and quality of life.
2. When they compared the two types of exercise, they didn’t find a significant difference. In other words, both strength and balance training and aerobic training were equally effective.
3. The only area where there was a slight difference was in the general health perception, where the strength and balance training group showed a bit more improvement.
This means that adding regular exercise to your routine could help manage your symptoms and improve your overall well-being if you have neuropathy. Whether you prefer strength and balance exercises or aerobic activities, both types of exercise can be beneficial.
The most important thing is to pick exercises that you like to do, because then it´s easier to stick to them.
If you suffer from pain and numbness in your arms or legs, remember to start slowly. Begin with exercises you feel comfortable doing, and gradually increase the intensity as your strength and balance improve.
