It’s challenging enough to reverse either enlarged prostate or type 2 diabetes on their own. But to tackle both at the same time, that’s something else.
A new study published in Naunyn-Schmiedeberg’s Archives of Pharmacology, discusses using a common pepper you might already have in your kitchen.
And the results were remarkable.
Researchers already know that people with type 2 diabetes have a higher risk of developing an enlarged prostate. The reason isn’t fully understood, but if the relationship exists, then managing blood sugar might help to manage prostate growth too.
The study was performed on a diabetic mouse model, where the mice were given diabetes through a high-fat diet combined with a low dose of the drug streptozotocin. This drug kills cells in the pancreas and thereby causes diabetes.
Another group of mice was given enlarged prostates by given them an overdose of testosterone.
All of the mice were then treated with capsaicin for two weeks so that researchers could see what effect it would have. They checked tissue samples and measured several proteins that play a role in prostate health and diabetes.
Capsaicin is the hottest component of chili peppers.
The results were promising.
-
1. Capsaicin reduced fasting blood sugar levels.
2. It also reduced prostate growth, prostate weight, and overall prostate size in the diabetic mice.
3. Capsaicin influenced the way cells behaved and interacted by, for example, reversing unwanted changes in the cells that worsen diabetes and prostate growth.
4. It also decreased protein levels linked to prostate growth and diabetes, such as 5alpha-reductase type II, androgen receptor, and prostate-specific antigen.
All of this shows that capsaicin may help to manage blood sugar levels in diabetes and also control prostate growth that often stems from it.
This study was performed on mice, of course, but if it also turns out to apply to humans, this might be good news for diabetics at risk of an enlarged prostate.
So, if you have diabetes, it might be beneficial to include more capsaicin in your diet.
There are two main ways to do this.
The most common way is through chili peppers. Jalapenos are the most popular and a good starting point, while habaneros are much hotter. Other options include cayenne pepper, which is often dried and ground, and chili flakes. You can incorporate them into many dishes like stews, curries, soups, and sauces.
Alternatively, capsaicin is also available in supplement form, typically capsules. These can be a good option if you don’t enjoy the taste of peppers or think they’re too strong.
Dairy products like milk can help soothe the burning sensation from capsaicin, if you accidentally overdo it.
