Sleep apnea can increase your risk of serious health problems like heart disease and diabetes, in addition to making you feel tired during the day.
Traditional approaches to managing sleep apnea have included weight loss, exercise, and, in more severe cases, mechanical interventions like CPAP machines.
However, a new study published in ERJ Open Research reveals a simple diet change as the solution.
The study looked at data from 14,210 people collected by the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The participants provided details of their diets over a 24-hour period.
These dietary patterns were then classified into various categories based on their plant-based content.
The most important of these categories were healthy plant-based, unhealthy plant-based, vegetarian, and a standard diet high in animal products like meat, eggs, and dairy.
The healthy plant-based category was rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and legumes, while the unhealthy plant-based category was focused on refined grains, sugary drinks, and processed foods.
Here’s what they found:
- 
1. People who ate any plant-based diet had a 19% lower risk of sleep apnea compared to those who ate the standard diet. 
2. Compared with those who ate the least healthy plant-based diet, those who ate the healthiest plant-based diet reduced their risk of sleep apnea by 17%.
3. Those who consumed a lot of unhealthy plant-based foods had a 22% higher risk of sleep apnea compared with those who didn’t.
4. Participants on a vegetarian diet reduced their sleep apnea risk by 16% compared with those who ate the most animal products.
 
Therefore, both vegan and vegetarian diets are good, but only if they contain relatively healthy foods. A healthy plant-based diet is the best you can do for controlling sleep apnea.
