Young-onset dementia, a condition affecting people under 65, has traditionally been attributed mainly to genetic factors.
But a new study in JAMA Neurology reveals that it is not all in our genes.
In fact, six out of seven causes of dementia are completely preventable.
The researchers from the University of Exeter and Maastricht University obtained the data of more than 356,000 people from the UK Biobank, which included just about all their medical, lifestyle, dietary, and socioeconomic and demographic information. 55% of them were women, and they had an average age of 54.6 years.
These individuals were observed between 2006 and 2021 to see who would go on to develop young-onset dementia. The scientists then examined their lifestyle and other factors to find relationships with this destructive condition.
They found 15 factors that contributed to this form of dementia, many of which are preventable.
If you’re ready for the big list, let’s go.
-
1. The only contributing genetic factor was the carrying of two apolipoprotein ε4 allele genetic variants, while most other people tend to have only one.
2. The sociodemographic factors that posed a risk were lower formal education and lower socioeconomic status.
3. The relevant lifestyle factors were no alcohol use, alcohol use disorder, and social isolation, meaning that both too much alcohol and abstinence from it were problematic.
4. The blood marker factors that posed a risk were vitamin D deficiency and high C-reactive protein levels, which is a marker of inflammation.
5. The harmful cardiometabolic factors were stroke, diabetes, heart disease, and low blood pressure.
6. Depression was the one psychiatric factor on the list of associated factors.
7. The other factors that contributed were hearing impairment and handgrip strength.
Interestingly, factors that many of us would have expected to find on this list were not found to be directly responsible for young-onset dementia, including diet, physical activity level, and smoking.
However, the scientists did mention that most of the contributing factors were preventable, since a lack of physical activity and unhealthy dieting are directly responsible for conditions like diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and possibly even high levels of systemic inflammation.
