If there is a family history of Alzheimer’s then your chances of developing this fatal disease in old age increases. However, it doesn’t always have to be this way.
By making positive changes in your lifestyle and adopting a healthy diet you can keep yourself safe from this grim disease.
Food that you need to avoid
Studies show that obese, hypertension patients, and high cholesterol patients are at increased risk to Alzheimer’s. Researchers in Stockholm have proved that pre-diabetes increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. That is why it is necessary for you to avoid foods that are rich in fat and sweet.
Aluminum is another substance that you need to avoid. Stop consuming food that has aluminum content. Also, avoid using aluminum utensils and aluminum foils.
Further, avoid eating junk and processed foods. Typically, these foods are high in fat, sodium, and toxic chemical addictives. For instance, high fructose corn syrup is often known to include mercury, which studies show, increases the chances of Alzheimer’s. Other foods that include mercury and need to be avoided are: swordfish and tuna. As a thumb rule, smaller fishes have less amount of mercury and are safer to eat than big fishes.
Foods that you need to eat
Now that we know what type of food to avoid, let’s see the food types that constitute a healthy diet.
Eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Foods such as blueberries, apples, broccoli, spinach, strawberries and apples are good for brain. Besides being good for brain, fresh vegetables and fruits are also rich sources of antioxidants. In addition to fruits and vegetables, coffee, dark chocolate, supplements containing Vitamin E and C, and green tea also provide our body with antioxidants.
Eat good amount of brain-healthy and heart-healthy omega-3 fats. Foods that are rich in omega-3 fats include walnuts, flaxseed, and fish oil.
Importance of exercise
Supplement a balanced diet with regular physical and mental exercises to prevent Alzheimer’s from developing. Remember that keeping your mind healthy is as important as keeping yourself physically fit. Daily spend some time in activities that engages and stimulates the mind. Solve puzzles, crosswords, or learn a new musical instrument or a new language to keep your mind active. To keep yourself physically fit, select an exercise regime that interests you. It will be a good idea to consult your doctor before starting an exercise regime, especially if you are overweight or have been physically inactive for long.
