Is vaping good for blood pressure? It’s been proven without a doubt that smoking is bad for blood pressure.

But what about vaping… is that okay?

Or does it even improve blood pressure?

The surprising answer is published in a new study in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research.

The research team analyzed medical information from the All of Us research program.

This included data from nearly 250,000 people collected over approximately four years.

This diverse group included about 204,000 non-users of any tobacco products, 3,164 exclusive e-cigarette users, nearly 34,000 exclusive traditional cigarette smokers, and about 8,300 dual users of both.

The researchers used advanced statistical methods to track the development of several cardiometabolic conditions, including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart failure, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

By comparing these outcomes with non-users, they were able to assess the risks associated with different forms of tobacco use, including e-cigarettes.

The results were quite revealing:

• Exclusive e-cigarette users had a 39% higher risk of developing high blood pressure. This is a slightly lower risk than traditional cigarettes, but still very high.

• E-cigarette users were 2.29 times more likely to develop COPD compared to non-users.

• E-cigarette use was not significantly linked to type 2 diabetes, heart failure, or cardiovascular disease in this study.

• Traditional cigarette smokers had significantly increased risks for all conditions studied.

• Surprisingly, dual users showed the highest risk overall, with particularly elevated risk for cardiovascular disease (2.18 times higher than non-users).

So, while e-cigarettes may carry slightly fewer risks than combustible cigarettes, the study highlights that they are far from risk-free, particularly regarding lung health and blood pressure.
