You’ve probably never given this light a second thought.
But you should.
Because, according to a new study in The Science of The Total Environment, it may be the main cause of your hypothyroidism.
And if you turn it off, your thyroid may just recover.
Scientists have long been concerned about how our modern, always-lit world disrupts natural biological processes, especially hormone regulation.
Curious about this, researchers examined 81,820 pregnant women from the China Birth Cohort Study since hypothyroidism is especially common during pregnancy.
They analyzed satellite data to measure artificial light exposure within a mile of each participant’s home and compared it to thyroid function.
The results were eye-opening:
-
• 4.77% of participants were diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
• Those with hypothyroidism had significantly higher nighttime light exposure.
• For each quartile increase in ALAN exposure, the risk of hypothyroidism rose by 15%.
• Overweight individuals were even more affected by nighttime light exposure.
If you’re concerned about your thyroid health, consider blocking outdoor light with blackout curtains or blinds.
But avoiding nighttime light may not be enough to heal your thyroid.
