Weaker bones are just a normal part of aging, right?
Maybe you need calcium?
Or weight training?
Nope, according to a new study in Hereditas, two common habits cause osteoporosis.
Chances are, you’re doing at least one — maybe both.
Researchers studied 330,000+ people, including over 6,300 with osteoporosis. They wanted to see if certain habits were causing weak bones—or just happening alongside them.
They looked at two big culprits: smoking and bitter drinks (like alcohol and herbal teas).
And here’s what they found:
-
• Smoking daily? Your osteoporosis risk jumps 42%.
• Heavy lifetime smoker? Your risk of fractures is 4x higher.
• Regularly drinking bitter beverages? Boom—4x the osteoporosis risk.
• Even non-alcoholic bitter drinks (like herbal teas and dark chocolate drinks) tripled the risk.
• Coffee? Surprisingly, no effect. You’re safe.
So why does this happen?
-
• Smoking messes up bone growth and steals calcium from your body.
• Alcohol blocks calcium and vitamin D, weakening your bones.
• Alcohol and some bitter drinks are acidic, draining calcium from your bones.
So, what can you do?
Quit smoking. Cut back on bitter drinks (except coffee). That’s a solid start.
But if you already have weak bones, don’t panic. Osteoporosis is 100% reversible — if you know what to do.
