ED is a very complex condition because so many different underlying things can cause it.
A new Journal of Medical Arts study nails an extremely strong but little-known factor.
If you have a specific underlying condition, you’re almost guaranteed to suffer ED.
Fortunately, there’s an easy way to reverse the ED even if you can’t cure the underlying cause.
To understand this link, researchers studied 300 men aged 18 to 50, all newly diagnosed with mental health conditions.
Importantly, none of the men were on psychiatric medications, as these can sometimes affect sexual function.
Using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, the study evaluated men with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and schizophrenia.
Here’s what they found:
-
• Overall Impact: 54% of participants had some level of ED.
• Severity Breakdown: 36% had mild ED, 16% mild-to-moderate, 2% moderate, and 0% severe.
• Schizophrenia: Every participant (100%) with schizophrenia experienced ED—60% mild and 40% mild-to-moderate.
• OCD: 72.7% of OCD patients had ED, with 63.6% experiencing mild and 9.1% mild-to-moderate cases.
• Depression: 47% of depressed men had ED, with 29.4% mild, 11.8% mild-to-moderate, and 5.9% moderate cases.
• Anxiety: 35.2% of men with anxiety reported ED—split evenly between mild and mild-to-moderate cases.
Why Does Mental Health Affect ED?
Mental health disorders disrupt the delicate processes involved in achieving and maintaining an erection. Here’s how:
-
1. Schizophrenia: Strains interpersonal relationships and emotional connection—key for sexual function.
2. Depression: Reduces libido and self-esteem.
3. Anxiety: Creates performance anxiety, fueling a vicious cycle.
4. OCD: Intrusive thoughts and excessive worry disrupt intimacy.
