Chronic Kidney Disease? Never eat thisThe single biggest cause of CKD has been discovered in a new study published in Nutrition and Health.

It’s a specific type of food we all eat occasionally or every day. If you stop eating these foods, your CKD may stop progressing or even go into remission.

The researchers recruited 143 patients with pre-dialysis CKD and divided them into two groups: early-stage CKD (30–59% kidney function) and late-stage CKD (less than 30% function).

They asked participants to recall everything they ate in the past 24 hours, using this data to calculate each person’s Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII). This score indicates whether a diet is pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory.

They then ran detailed health tests, including:

• Body composition analysis for hydration and cell health.
• Blood tests for inflammation (C-reactive protein levels).
• Kidney filtration tests to measure kidney health.

Here’s what they discovered:

Worse Diet, Worse Kidneys: Higher inflammatory diets were linked to lower kidney function. For every one-point increase in DII, the kidney filtration rate dropped by 2.31 mL/min.

Weakened Cell Health: Pro-inflammatory diets reduced phase angle, a measure of cell membrane integrity and overall cell health.

Anti-Inflammatory Diets Protect: Diets rich in cereals, millet, vegetables, roots, spices, poultry, and healthy oils (like olive and avocado) support better kidney function and healthier cells.

Late-Stage CKD Struggles: People in early CKD stages had better hydration and healthier cells than those in late stages. The takeaway? Pro-inflammatory diets speed up kidney disease and harm your cells, while anti-inflammatory diets slow progression and boost kidney health.
