Hemorrhoids are common. Yet most people misunderstand them.
A recent study published in Cureus found that only 21% of participants had a good understanding of hemorrhoids.
While misconceptions kept many from seeking treatment.
And the #1 reason why people didn’t seek help was terrifying. Plus, it causes lots of problems down the lane.
The study surveyed 495 adults to see how much they knew about hemorrhoids and what kept them from seeking treatment.
Takeaways:
1. Low Knowledge Levels: Most people didn’t fully grasp what hemorrhoids are or what causes them. While about half correctly identified hemorrhoids as swollen veins in the anal canal. 60% mistakenly believed that simply sitting on the toilet too long was the main cause.
2. Education and Knowledge: Education level made a significant difference. Among university graduates, 40% had a solid understanding of hemorrhoids. Only 10% of participants with lower education levels were knowledgeable about the condition.
3. Embarrassment as a Barrier: The #1 reason people didn’t seek help? Embarrassment. About 67% of participants felt too self-conscious to visit a doctor. For many, discomfort around anal examinations (56%) also kept them from getting checked.
4. Not Taken Seriously: 32% of participants didn’t think hemorrhoids were a serious enough issue to warrant a visit to the doctor. Surprisingly, only 20% turned to natural remedies—most simply ignored the condition.
When people did seek medical help, 78% said it was pain that pushed them. 43% sought help due to general discomfort. And 41% because they noticed blood in their stool.
Delaying treatment until hemorrhoids are extremely painful or cause bleeding can make them harder to treat and may lead to severe complications down the line.
