Most heart health advice: all “DON’Ts” no “DO’s.”
– Don’t eat fats,
– don’t eat sugar,
– don’t eat cholesterol,
…don’t, don’t, don’t.
So it’s nice to get one DO advice, right?
Because there is one thing that you must “do” to save yourself from heart attacks.
Yet the World Health Organization reveals in a new study published in the Lancet Global Health journal that one-third of people in the Western world never DO this.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends adults get five hours of moderate exercise (like brisk walking).
Or 2.5 hours of strenuous exercise (such as running) each week to maintain good health.
But are we following that advice?
A review of 358 surveys from 168 countries covering 1.9 million people revealed some concerning trends:
-
1. Inactivity Levels: 27.5% of adults worldwide do not exercise at all.
2. Gender Gap: Women are less active than men. 32% of women are inactive compared to 23% of men. This gap is most significant in Central South Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.
3. Income and Activity: Inactivity is higher in wealthier countries. 37% in high-income countries compared to 16% in low-income nations. In wealthier countries, sedentary work is more common. Lower-income nations see more manual labor.
4. Regional Differences: Latin America, the Caribbean (39%), high-income Western countries (37%), and high-income Asian countries (36%) had the highest inactivity rates.
5. Local Factors: Within countries, exercise levels depend on access to gyms, community sports programs, nature walks, and road infrastructure.
6. Urbanization Impact: Countries like China and Brazil saw lower physical activity levels and poorer health outcomes due to rapid urbanization and economic development.
