A specific type of duckweed drops your blood sugar 20%, keeps it down 20% longer, and works for most people.
This is according to a new study published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism.
Mankai is a type of duckweed that grows in water and is packed with protein and other health-boosting nutrients. In fact, previous research has linked it to brain and heart health and reduced fat in the liver.
As a result, a team of scientists thought it would be useful to investigate whether it also offered benefits for blood sugar.
In this four-week trial, 45 adults with type 2 diabetes were enrolled. The participants, aged around 64 and with an HbA1c range of 6.5 to 8.5, were monitored using continuous glucose monitoring devices to track their blood sugar.
The trial was designed so that each participant received both treatments in different phases. For the first two weeks, one group consumed 300 ml of Mankai drink after dinner, while the other group drank water. After a four-day break, they switched drinks for the next two weeks.
Importantly, the participants didn’t change their diet, physical activity, or medications during the study. This allowed the researchers to isolate the effect of the Mankai drink on their blood sugar levels.
The results were impressive:
-
1. Mankai lowered post-meal blood sugar peaks by about 20% compared to water. This means that after meals, the participants’ blood sugar levels spiked less when they drank Mankai.
2. The time it took for blood sugar to peak after eating was delayed by 20%, meaning it took longer for their blood sugar to rise.
3. Both the rise and fall of blood sugar levels were more gradual with Mankai, which is a good sign for blood sugar stability.
4. Mankai lowered the triglyceride-to-HDL cholesterol ratio, a measure that relates to heart health, within just two weeks. This is another promising benefit for people with diabetes, who often face an increased risk of heart problems.
About two-thirds of the participants responded positively to Mankai, showing measurable improvements in their blood sugar levels. This suggests that, while not everyone will experience the same benefits, Mankai could be a valuable addition to a diabetes management plan for many people.
