A traditional Indian herb has been found to drastically shrink enlarged prostate.
This is according to a recent study published in the journal Pharmaceuticals that compared this herb to leading medications and placebos.
The researchers wanted to find out whether Ixeris polycephala (IP) could help alleviate the progression of an enlarged prostate by modifying key factors such as cell proliferation, apoptosis (programmed cell death), and inflammation in the prostate. They performed their study on rats.
To create enlarged prostate in these rats, they gave them daily testosterone injections for four weeks, leading to an increase in prostate size, mimicking the condition seen in humans.
During this period, some of the rats also received daily doses of either IP extract, the medication finasteride (a common enlarged prostate drug), or a placebo.
The results were promising, showing that the IP-treated rats experienced significant improvements in several key areas.
-
1. Rats treated with IP had a notably lower prostate-to-body weight ratio compared to those that only received testosterone or placebo. This suggests that IP could help reduce the overall size of the prostate.
2. IP treatment decreased levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the blood, a hormone linked to prostate growth. 5alpha-reductase, an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, was also reduced in the IP-treated group.
3. IP decreased the number of proliferating cells in the prostate. In enlarged prostate, the balance between cell growth and cell death is disrupted, leading to excessive growth of cells. By lowering proteins like cyclin D1, IP restored this balance.
4. IP treatment increased the levels of pro-apoptosis proteins, encouraging the death of excess prostate cells. Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, helps to remove damaged or unnecessary cells from the body, a process that doesn’t happen in an enlarged prostate.
5. IP led to a reduction in inflammatory markers in the prostate. This suggests that it may help alleviate the inflammation that worsens enlarged prostate symptoms.
With its ability to reduce prostate size, balance hormones, suppress cell proliferation, promote necessary cell death, and decrease inflammation, Ixeris polycephala shows the potential to be developed into a natural treatment option for enlarged prostate.
Commonly known as Many-Flowered Ixeris, this plant belongs to the Asteraceae (sunflower) family and is native to India and East Asia.
Currently, it is not available as a health extract outside the Indian subcontinent, but keep an eye out for it as research on its effects continues.
