Fortunately, a new study published in the Vocational Nursing Sciences journal reveals a fun, easy, and effective way to reduce anxiety as we age.
Previous studies have found art therapy to be a useful treatment for anxiety, both in adults and children. It proved to be particularly beneficial for those who found it difficult to verbalize their feelings.
As a result, the researchers wanted to evaluate how well it could reduce anxiety levels among the elderly. They conducted their study on residents at the Budi Agung Social Welfare Center in Indonesia.
They randomly selected 60 individuals from the center and divided them into two groups: 30 in the intervention group received Art Therapy, and 30 in the control group received no treatment.
To gather data, they used anxiety questionnaires and direct observations of the participants’ behavior before and after the intervention.
They then analyzed the data using a variety of statistical tests.
Their investigation yielded some useful results.
- 
1.	There was a notable reduction in anxiety levels in the intervention group after they underwent Art Therapy sessions.
2. The intervention group showed significantly lower anxiety levels compared to the control group. 3. Positive changes were observed in the behavior and emotional expressions of those who participated in Art Therapy. They were more engaged, showed more smiles, and had better social interactions. 
Therefore, Art Therapy is an effective way to reduce anxiety among the elderly.
In this study, they asked participants to express their emotions through creative activities like painting, drawing, and crafts after giving them materials like paint, chalk, and markers. But you can pick any form of creative expression that you enjoy.
Art therapy is believed to reduce anxiety in at least three ways:
- 
1. It helps elderly individuals express their emotions in a non-verbal way, which can be very therapeutic. 2. Engaging in creative activities can be a great stress reliever, because you’re doing something that has no right or wrong answer or pressure to do it perfectly. 3. Art Therapy sessions can also provide a social setting where elderly individuals can interact, thus reducing feelings of isolation.
