If you’re a man suffering from ED, you may think that although it sucks, at least it’s not life-threatening.
Think again!
A new study in Preventive Medicine reveals a terrifying connection between ED and type 2 diabetes—A connection you need to know about today!
Researchers from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine used medical record data from the Virtual Data Warehouse, including data on 3,131 ED patients and men without ED for comparison.
While some participants had ED, they were free of prediabetes, high blood sugar, and diabetes at the start.
This is what the researchers found.
-
1. Of patients with ED, 8.1% developed prediabetes or type 2 diabetes within two years, a stark contrast to the 3.2% without ED.
2. Men with ED were 34% more likely to have prediabetes or diabetes than men without ED.
3. The increased risk was 2.5 times higher in patients newly diagnosed with ED than in those without ED.
4. Approximately 30% of the men had both ED and prediabetes/diabetes diagnosed on the same day, while nearly 75% received a prediabetes or diabetes diagnosis within a year of their ED diagnosis.
These findings suggest that ED, of which men are acutely aware, can be used to identify many cases of diabetes and prediabetes, of which they are typically unaware.
There is a clear link between these two conditions, and treating one may improve the other.
