More than 50% of men over age 50 suffer from ED, and the causes and treatment options often aren’t clear.
A new study published in Sexual Medicine reveals an unexpected cause.
Apparently, a common type of bacteria that is easily treatable with medications is behind many cases of ED.
The researchers decided to examine the links between ED and Helicobacter pylori (HP), folic acid, vitamin B12, and homocysteine.
They picked these compounds because people with HP infections tend to be low in folic acid and vitamin B12, and people with these two deficiencies tend to have high homocysteine levels.
Homocysteine is an amino acid that has been linked with cardiovascular disease when appearing in the blood in large amounts, and of course, cardiovascular disease is a main risk factor for ED.
Hence, they hypothesized that HP infection could cause ED by lowering folic acid and vitamin B12 levels, increasing homocysteine and heart disease.
They recruited 84 men with and 42 men without ED. They used the usual IIEF-5 questionnaire to diagnose ED and ruled out ED cases caused by psychological factors such as anxiety or depression.
They then tested their subjects’ blood for HP, folic acid, vitamin B12, and homocysteine.
This is what they found.
-
1. The ED group had higher levels of HP infection.
2. The ED group had lower levels of folic acid and vitamin B12.
3. The ED group had higher levels of homocysteine.
4. Low folic acid was especially strongly related to the occurrence of ED, with the lowest levels in the subjects with the most severe ED.
These findings confirmed the hypothesis that an HP infection contributes to ED through the processes by which it increases homocysteine and thereby cardiovascular disease.
The discovery that low folic acid is strongly associated with ED suggests a second mechanism by which HP infection causes ED.
Folic acid is involved in the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that plays a key role in achieving and maintaining an erection.
Nitric oxide helps to relax the smooth muscles of the blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow and resulting in an erection. Folate is necessary for the conversion of the amino acid arginine into nitric oxide.
If you suffer from ED, it wouldn’t hurt to get tested for HP, which is usually easily treatable with medication.
