Common Spice Beats Enlarged Prostate DrugsMedications for enlarged prostate are rather ineffective and often come with a long list of side effects.

Because they can be so bothersome, researchers have been looking for natural treatment options.

A study published on Research Square found one extremely effective treatment in the form of a common spice found in all supermarkets and health food stores.

Curcumin is a natural compound found in the root of the turmeric plant. Turmeric is the chief spice in curry. Curcumin is responsible for turmeric’s bright yellow color.

Because curcumin has long been studied and used for its health properties, a research team led by scientists from the Magna Graecia University of Catanzaro in Italy knew that it had antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor properties that could make it a potential treatment for enlarged prostate.

They decided to study a curcumin supplement to see whether it could reduce enlarged prostate symptoms.

They recruited a sample of men with moderate to severe enlarged prostate and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), dividing them into six groups.

1. Those who took curcumin alone.
2. Those who took both alpha-blockers and curcumin.
3. Those who took alpha-blockers, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, and curcumin.
4. Those who took nothing.
5. Those who took alpha-blockers alone.
6. Those who took both alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.

Alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors are both common enlarged prostate treatments.

After six months of these treatments, the scientists evaluated the participants on a few indices: the International Prostate Symptom Score, quality of life, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Impact Index, and urine flow quality.

After crunching the numbers, the scientists discovered that the participants on curcumin improved on a wide variety of measurements more than those who did not take it.

1. They improved on both the overall International Prostate Symptom Score and the Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Impact Index.

2. They were better at storing urine instead of dribbling it.

3. Their ability to empty their bladders improved.

4. Their quality-of-life scores increased.

5. Their peak and average urinary flow rates increased.

6. Their prostate-specific antigen (PSA) score decreased, indicating a reduction in the type of abnormal prostate cells that bring about an enlarged prostate.

Curcumin had these effects with and without the other prostate drugs, so you may just as well omit the others and take the curcumin alone.

However, curcumin is only one piece of the puzzle. To permanently heal enlarged prostate, you need to make a few more simple lifestyle changes found here…
