There are several treatment options for an enlarged prostate. Most of them are quite ineffective, and some of them are very invasive.
This makes it important that when you choose a treatment option, you choose wisely.
A new study in The International Journal of Technology Assessment in Health Care reveals two shocking pieces of news:
-
1) The most common treatment options doctors prescribe are the least effective.
2) The most effective treatment option is 100% natural, with minimal side effects.
The study authors searched many medical and technology databases for studies that compared these treatments. Treatment effectiveness was judged according to the ability to reduce men’s scores on the International Prostate Symptom Score scale.
They reviewed 237 studies and analyzed the 20 that used the strongest scientific methods.
They sought answers to two questions: which treatments worked best and which had the longest-lasting effects.
Here are the treatments in order from most to least effective over one year:
-
- photoselective vaporization of the prostate,
- transurethral resection of the prostate,
- water vapor thermal therapy,
- prostatic urethral lift,
- drug therapy with alpha-blockers and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.
The two most effective treatments are very invasive surgeries, but they were only slightly more effective than the minimally invasive procedures that were third and fourth most effective.
Drug therapy, which is usually a doctor’s first plan of action, was the least effective treatment.
Water vapor thermal therapy (WVTT) was the most effective treatment over time. In fact, the effects of the other treatments reversed in twice as many people as the effects of WVTT did.
This means that WVTT is the best option, as it is very effective and durable.
So, what is it?
It is a nonsurgical treatment that is completely natural and is usually done in your urologist’s office.
The doctor releases steam (hot sterile water vapor) into the parts of the prostate that need to shrink.
The energy naturally present in the steam damages the excess prostate tissue, which your body’s immune system then absorbs and destroys.
When this excess prostate tissue is gone, the duct by which urine is removed from your body, called the urethra, can then open and let urine flow through easily, as it should.
