ED is becoming so common that around 50% of men over 50 experience it at least occasionally.
Fortunately, treatment options are becoming more and more effective, and many men report great results from modern medications.
Although this might not be so fortunate, according to a new study published in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology.
This is because one of the most common treatment options for ED can cause three types of permanent blindness.
Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (or PDE5Is) are by far the most popular drugs for ED. These include Viagra, Cialis, sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil, and avanafil.
You take a pill and can engage in successful sex 30 minutes later.
What could be wrong with that?
Well, the most frequent side effects include temporary visual disturbances such as blurred vision, light sensitivity, and a blue tinge.
But this new study shows that the visual problems are not mild and often not temporary.
The authors analyzed the health insurance claims of 213,033 American men between 2006 and 2020. None of them had any eye problems before they started taking these medications regularly.
Each of these 213,033 consumers of these drugs was paired with four non-consumers to compare the occurrence of three serious eye conditions in the two groups.
This is what they found when they compared the drug takers with their peers.
-
1. Their chance of suffering a serous retinal detachment was 258% higher.
2. Their risk of retinal vascular occlusion was 44% higher.
3. Their risk of ischemic optic neuropathy doubled.
4. Their risk of developing any one of these conditions was 85% higher.
These are huge risks, and all of these conditions can cause a complete loss of vision.
A serous retinal detachment does not involve a tear in the retina, but the retina detaches completely because of a buildup of fluid beneath it.
Retinal vascular occlusion occurs when one of the arteries is blocked that carries blood from your heart to your retina.
Ischemic optic neuropathy occurs when the optic nerve is damaged because of a lack of blood flow to it.
All three of these conditions involve an abnormal flow of blood or fluid, and they have all been related to high blood pressure by previous research.
As a result, the researchers speculated that these drugs might cause these negative effects because of the way they promote blood flow to the penis.
It is possible that an abnormal promotion of a high amount of blood flow to one organ can interfere with blood flow to other body parts, according to the authors.
Given these big risks, it is better to find a natural alternative method to dealing with ED.
