The usual treatments for neuropathy pain include some strong drugs with terrible side effects such as opioids, anticonvulsants, and antidepressants.
But a new literature review in the journal Practical Pain Management reveals a substance that is easily available in many foods (or supplement) that can instantly relief neuropathy pain.
Best of all, it comes with no side effects.
There is quite a lot of research that shows that oxidative stress is partly responsible for neuropathy. When there are too many reactive oxygen species in your nerve tissue, they damage nerve cells and cause pain.
Oxitive stress also affects the operations of our neurons and reduces blood flow to nerve tissue, which causes further nerve damage.
The natural enemies of reactive oxygen species are antioxidant agents. Antioxidant agents are substances that repair the cells that are damaged by reactive oxygen species and thereby neutralize their operations.
One such antioxidant is alpha lipoic acid or ALA, a substance produced by plants and animal bodies.
The authors of the literature review found a study in which the researchers compared two forms of ALA supplementation, given to 100 people with medically diagnosed neuropathy.
Both forms of the supplement worked to reduce neuropathic pain, right from the beginning of the supplementation period until 60 days later when the study ended.
Up to 66% of the participants also reported an improvement in their sleep quality, and 72% reported a reduction in the painkillers they were taking.
The ALA proved to be safe and free of side effects.
You can either take alpha lipoic acid as a supplement with a recommended daily dose of 600 milligrams per day, or you can consume lots of foods that contain it.
Food contains too little to serve as a good neuropathy treatment, however, so your best bet may be a supplement.
It is present in smaller amounts in liver and kidney meat, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, and green peas.
