Time is crucial, according to a new study published in the journal Communications Medicine.
There is one extremely effective thing you can do to fight off Alzheimer’s and strengthen your brain long into old age.
But you must do this before it’s too late. Otherwise, it will become totally useless.
One of the first signs of cognitive impairment in old age is the fading of episodic memory. Episodic memory refers to memories of things that have happened to you, such as the time, location, and details of specific events.
This is not just frustrating, like forgetting where you left your keys, because it can also rob you of many of your happiest memories that can keep your mood up as you age.
Considering the importance of these memories, a research team at the University of Pittsburgh decided to examine previously conducted studies on the relationship between aerobic exercise and episodic memory to see when and how much we should exercise.
They found 36 studies with 2,750 participants that investigated the deterioration of episodic memory from 70 years upwards in people who did not have dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
These were their findings:

1. The younger they started with an aerobic exercise program, the less they suffered from memory decline above age 70.
2. The people who started exercising before age 55 experienced the smallest memory decline, while those who waited until age 69 hardly benefited at all.
3. The relationship was especially strong in women, but was also strong in men.
4. Those who exercised three times a week for four months or more saw the greatest benefit.
5. The results varied significantly on the optimal length of these exercise sessions, showing that anything between 15 and 90 minutes could work.
