Acid reflux is largely preventable via lifestyle changes, which makes it important to identify its causes and the changes that can prevent or treat it.
A new study published in the journal Risk Management and Healthcare Policy identifies four lifestyle factors that are the worst for acid reflux.
Stop doing these four things, and your acid reflux may evaporate.
The researchers had their subjects complete a questionnaire consisting of three parts:

– the first collected demographic data
– the second examined lifestyle and risk factors for the development of acid reflux
– the third assessed their acid reflux symptoms and severity.
In the sample, 26.6% of people reported symptomatic acid reflux.
Regarding the demographic and health risk factors, let’s see what they found:

1. Men were more likely than women to have this problem.
2. People who lived in urban areas had a greater risk than those who lived in rural areas, probably because of differences in diets and physical activity.
3. Overweight and obese participants carried a high risk.
4. Those with a history of indigestion, stomach ulcers, or other digestive problems experienced acid reflux in higher numbers.
These results are consistent with previous research on this topic.
So, what about lifestyle factors? They found that people with acid reflux were more likely to have the following lifestyle habits:

1. Smoking or a history of smoking.
2. The frequent use of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
3. The frequent drinking of soft drinks.
4. Frequent consumption of spicy meals.
These risk factors are also consistent with previous studies.
Luckily, all of these lifestyle factors that cause acid reflux are modifiable, so you know exactly what to do if you want to avoid it.
But if you’re already suffering from acid reflux, even altering these lifestyle factors isn’t going to be enough.
