High blood pressure is the number one most prolific health problem in the world, according to the World Health Organization.
Untreated, it will almost unavoidably lead to heart attack, stroke, or something worse.
But now, new research from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has proven one of the leading blood pressure drugs increases cancer risk by a whopping 250%.
You need to avoid this specific drug at all cost.
In the study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, scientists followed the health of post-menopausal women who were taking calcium channel blockers (CCAs) to treat hypertension.
What they found was that women who take this type of blood pressure drug were more than 2 and half times more likely to develop both invasive ductal and invasive lobular carcinomas, together comprising 90% of all types of breast cancers.
What’s more troubling is that doctors are still prescribing this type of medication to postmenopausal women.
The study also showed an elevated risk of developing breast cancer with other commonly prescribed blood pressure medications like diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and beta blockers.
As well, women who are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have a 50% chance of developing breast cancer anyway, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Studies like the one out of the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center are few and far between, leaving the need for additional studies on medications and their cancer risks for men as a high priority.
