Researchers at Germany’s University of Konstanz discovered something surprising in 2014.
Apparently, genetically caused high blood pressure can be cured with a simple, natural method – and no medications or side effects.
In fact, if you can sit down and tell me a story, you can heal the DNA that causes high blood pressure this way. And, you’ll also lose weight if you want to.
Stress is a universal phenomenon. Between heavy workloads, traffic noise, traffic jams, and financial concerns, no one is genuinely free of it.
Several studies show that people who live with extreme stress are more likely to suffer from heart problems, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, and obesity.
In 2014, researchers at Germany’s University of Konstanz discovered that people who are highly stressed had a high number of strand breaks in their DNA. If you turn your mind back to biology classes, you will remember that each DNA molecule consists of two strands that are coiled around each other. These are the strands that are broken by stress.
The researchers ventured an educated guess on the two responsible mechanisms:
1. They are broken by the elevated level of adrenalin in the blood of stressed people, as adrenalin stimulates some receptors that then kill vital proteins; and,
2. They are broken by oxidative stress, which is in turn caused by the immune system’s activation of inflammatory processes in response to the stress.
This DNA damage is significant because all our genetic information is stored in our DNA. When our DNA is damaged, it compromises our bodies’ ability to function normally.
Now it makes sense that stress seems to cause heart problems, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, and obesity.
The German researchers went further, however. They split the study participants into two groups:
a) one that received a four-month course of narrative exposure therapy, and
b) one that received no treatment at all.
After four months, they examined the DNA in the blood cells and blood plasma of both groups, and discovered that the DNA of the narrative exposure therapy group had been largely repaired.
This means that the high blood pressure, heart problems, stroke, cancer, and obesity that accompany stress can be corrected by narrative exposure therapy via its ability to repair stress-induced DNA damage.
So what is narrative exposure therapy?
Narrative exposure therapy is a type of psychotherapy that is used on the highly traumatized populations of refugee camps.
The psychotherapist invites the sufferer to recount his or her whole life story, which will include all the traumatic events. The two of them then reconstruct the story of the sufferer’s life to include information that will help her deal with her counter-productive thoughts and feelings. At the end of the process he/she receives a written account of this new biographical narrative that he/she can repeat to himself/herself until the worst of the trauma dies down.
You may want to ask what the traumatic experiences of refugee populations have to do with your life.
If creating an emotionally and intellectually positive biographical narrative can help highly traumatized refugees, it can certainly help moderately stressed people like us.
In other words, if we learn to think more positively about our lives and to keep our negative emotions in perspective, we can repair the genetic damage caused by stress, and if we repair this genetic damage, we can lower our risk for high blood pressure and other widespread 21st century ailments.
