Fact: you need minerals to stay alive. No minerals in the body, no more you.
But wait just a second, because here’s another fact for you to bite into: too much of one particular mineral from the wrong source can result in a heart attack.
A little scary.
Do you have plans for a cookout or a barbeque dinner? You might want to reconsider your plans! Researchers have found that the iron from red meat can increase the risk of heart disease.
The research helps in making the connection between meat-rich diet and heart disease.
Meat, beef and animal-based food are rich in heme iron which is absorbed better in the system compared to the non-heme iron from vegetables and vegetarian foods. In fact, heme-iron is absorbed at a rate of 35 percent compared to 5 percent for non-heme iron.
Since heme iron is absorbed so well in the body, it can even bypass the finely tuned iron regulation system causing inflammation and damage to arteries. This in turn can lead to cardiovascular problems and cancer.
The researchers analyzed 21 previous studies involving 300,000 participants over a 10 year period. They concluded that those participants who consumed the most amount of heme iron through a diet rich in meat, showed a 57 percent increase in risk of developing heart disease compared to those who consumed the least amount of heme iron.
Interestingly, the iron from vegetable sources did not pose any health risks even when consumed in excess.
It is believed that heme iron causes inflammation and subsequently artery damage by speeding up the oxidation of LDL cholesterol.
However, the solution is not to shun iron-rich food completely. Consume red meat, fish and beef in moderation and include more iron from leafy vegetables and legumes. Iron deficiency can be extremely harmful as it can cause anemia, fatigue and many other health issues.
I know nobody wants to hear this but there is such a growing evidence that consuming animal products in excess is a great contributor to almost all modern diseases. One more point for vegan diet.
What everyone has to keep in mind is that low iron is also very, very bad for you. So this study applies to people who consume a lot of meat and therefore have high iron level. Meat just spikes it.
Isn’t it interesting that our ancestors, up to the late 19th century, ate as much protein food as they wanted, or could acquire, including a lot of meat, including the fat, yet they did not suffer from the same modern diseases that we do. How does that square with the info in the studies cited? What did they do or know that we don’t?
They did not consume any processed foods, refined sugar or flour like we do today. Could our modern diet, other than meat, play a significant role in modern diseases?
Unfortunately, the article doesn't discuss the diet of the animals that you eat. Knowing some of the benefits of grassfed beef makes me wonder if the GMO diet of commercial meat animals might have an effect on heart attacks so that high iron levels are not necessarily the cause of the problem.
Even though it is hard to admit to most of the meat consumers, the fact is that meat products are not healthy for us! More than more studies conclude that. It does not matter if the meat is organic and non GMO.
Eating dead animals results in highly acidic environment in our bodies which creates a lot of health problems : cancer, cardiovascular diseases, immune related issues.
We can get all needed nutrients from plant based foods to be healthy and live long.
Why are we so obsessed with breeding life stock for food? These animals are kept and killed in inhumane conditions and at the end they are not even healthy for us…
I just hope that the next level of human evolution means stop being so cruel and ignorant towards other beings on this earth.
God created us all equally, and not use and abuse one another but coexist together in piece and respect.
Thanks for spreading the right message BlueHeronHealthNews!
perhaps the iron fed to the cattle was at fault
I am a vegetarian for almost 15 years. After I stopped eating meat my health improved drastically. A lot of people told me that I looked 10 years younger and I had so much energy. And I have never been seriously sick, besides a mild cold.
By the way, the reason I stopped eating meat is to try to manage my Type 2 diabetes which was completely cured after few months of non meat diet. So it works! at least it worked for me and my best friend who was amazed by the results.
And I do agree with Jason, killing poor animals so we can stuff ourselves is just not right….
To William:
Don’t forget that the lifespan of our ancestors was way shorter than ours now..
So my guess is that they did suffer from all kind of diseases, except that they did not have the available treatments or the right information about the health and diet.
Jason you are wrong! God did not create man and animal equally but in fact put us in dominion over the animals. We are to use them as good stewards and treat them well but not elevate them to our level. I agree the food processing industry is poisoning us that’s why we need to eat whole foods and grass feed meats.
If heme-iron is extracted from red meats etc., what would be the risk of heart disease from fats and other toxins in those foods? Is there a heightened risk from the combination of negative pathogens?
Now all you have got to do to lead a healthy life is as simple as what I’m going to catalogue now. A gentleman named K. Rao has been advocating this protocol for over 30 years. If anybody wants I’ll give his contact number. All credit goes to him and him alone.
This is a 45 day protocol to treat most diseases – no less than 30.
First and foremost STOP sugar intake. No smoking no tea/coffee no hard/soft drinks. No health drinks No protein powder and all. No MILK and DAIRY products.
Make unfiltered juice of the following and drink on empty stomach in the morning.
1. 30 coriander leaves
2. 15 pudina (mint) leaves
3. 06 spinach (palak/palang) leaves
4. 10 curry leaves
5. 3 betel (pan) leaves
6. 15 gm betel gourd (karela/uchche) small ones
