The health benefits of getting optimum amounts of vitamins and minerals are many, and people are even finding out that just a mild deficiency can have widespread consequences, especially for vitamins that affect many processes in the body.
One vitamin in particular is critical in regulating everything in the body from the immune response to bone health. Lack of it has been linked to type 2 diabetes and arthritis.
And now a new study reveals it’s essential to bring blood pressure down. On the average, people lowered their blood pressure 4 points by adding in this one vitamin – some, much more.
Recent studies from a number of universities and hospitals, like Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston are noting that for many Americans, vitamin D deficiency launches a cacophony of health woes.
The study revealed that people with the worst vitamin D deficiencies are also the ones with the highest blood pressure.
Many doctors are taking notice as well, opting to look at blood tests to see if a hypertensive patient may be experiencing a deficiency. Simply adding the proper supplementation may even mean the difference in whether or not a person might be able to avoid prescription drugs as treatment.
Not only does vitamin D directly impact blood pressure health, but it is also critical in a number of other systems.
Vitamin D allows blood vessels to relax, thereby lowering blood pressure. However, if there is a deficiency, a glitch in any one of the other systems will add to a mounting blood pressure problem.
Diseases like certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, infectious diseases and heart disease are all blamed in large part to low vitamin D. Any of these diseases by themselves will also increase blood pressure due to the added stress on the body. Potentially, if you solve the deficiency you can wipe out several insults all at once.

Interesting article with very important point, vitamin D is really essential. But how is the best way to get vitamin D? I’ve been tested for vitamin D and the results showed I had a deficiency. But I’m still not sure why because I get plenty of sun (not to mention was living in a tropical country at the time where the sun is very strong). I eat meat, dairy products, etc. It’s really not clear why I have a vitamin D deficiency. I’d welcome any advice on why this is and on what to do. Currently, I’ve already gone off meat and am thinking of going vegan, so probably the problem would become even more compounded. Thanks for thoughts and advice.
Jane
great info,I would really make sure vitamin D and multivitamin supplements is available besides my antihypertensive pills
What is the daily requirement
Dr. Hollick recommends 50,000 iu’s of vitamin D3 EVERY OTHER week. This should get your levels to 50 ng/dl or greater. Vitamin isn’t really a vitamin but actually a steroidal hormone. Also, suntan lotion restricts D from metabolizing in the skin. Staying in the sun for short periods of time isn’t necessarily bad.
Is it true that cod liver oil is a type of Vitamin D ? I do take one liquid soft gel of it every day but do not know if it would be Vitamin D 3 …or what?
…….On the label it claims to be a rich 100% natural source of vitamin D (130 I.U.s) and 1,250 I.U.s of Vitamin A. (D: 32% DV and A: 25% DV) ? Supposedly my blood tests have my Vitamin D level as fine. .
……Only once about 5-7 years ago, I tested low on Vitamin D when I worked 6 hours a day in an inside room (no windows). The next year I tested normal (in a room with a wall of windows).
Since my comment/question is still ‘under moderation’ (?) I hope I remember to check back here later/tomorrow. Thanks =)
I have vitamin D deficiency as my T receptor cells are turned right down. I lived in Kenya from age 3 months to 7 years and have dark skin. Nature obviously turned the receptors down thinking I would be living there forever.
People with dark skin are more suseptable to D deficiency which probably explains why those with darker skin types suffer more with hypertension and other related conditions than fair skinned people.
I take drops as they are easily absorbed and take 5,000 iu daily which is more than rcomended. However, since being on the regime I am fitter and healthier at 54 than I was at 40. My hypertension is gone and I feel great. Get your vitamin D out as it is a miracle hormone.
good site keeping you up to date on all the newest thinking
Great to see the information with out jumping thru 9hundred hoops
