High blood pressure is the number one most prolific health problem in the world, according to the World Health Organization.
Leaving it untreated or unmanaged can, and routinely does, lead to a litany of devastating- but preventable – diseases. But what do you do when the treatment causes bigger problems than leaving something untreated?
This is the focus of today’s article, where we will look at new research that shows how certain blood pressure drugs cause cancer.
Read on to find out what drug we’re talking about and what to do instead to lower your blood pressure…
In a study out of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, findings linking drugs for high blood pressure to cancer were released in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
In the study, scientists followed the health of post-menopausal women who were taking calcium channel blockers (CCAs) to treat hypertension. What they found was that women who take this type of blood pressure drug were more than 2 and a half times more likely to develop both invasive ductal and invasive lobular carcinomas, together comprising 90% of all types of breast cancers.
What’s more troubling is that doctors are still prescribing this type of medication to post menopausal women even though they are at a highly increased risk of developing osteoarthritis and calcium supplements are contraindicated with CCAs.
As well, women who are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have a 50% chance of developing breast cancer anyway, according to the National Institutes of Health.
The study showed an elevated risk of developing breast cancer with other commonly prescribed blood pressure medications like diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and beta blockers, too.
Studies like the one out of the Hutchinson Cancer Research Center are few and far between, leaving the need for additional studies on medications and their cancer risks for men as a high priority.

Thanks for the great information. It does not surprise me that these strong medications cause cancer. Imagine, all other damaging side effects that we are not aware of…
50% chance, or 50% higher chance? Important difference.
"The study showed an elevated risk of developing breast cancer with other commonly prescribed blood pressure medications like diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and beta blockers, too."
FALSE. The study in question explicitly finds there is NO connection between these other blood pressure drugs and breast cancer. A so-called "health news" site might want to exercise slightly more rigorous fact-checking.
medicines really have unpredictable effects to our body, after so many years of taking them into your system,so maybe better resort to herbal medicines
I would put a question mark on the findings yet there is no denying that all allopathic medicines have side effects when used on long term basis. Primary cause of blood pressure is poor lifestyle and wrong eating habits. Ayurveda can cure with lifestyle changes and herbal medicines provided one is willing to switch gradually from allopathic to Ayervedic herbs with major changes in diet. Cancer is largely caused by eating food which are contraindicated. Ayurveda has listed foods which should not be combined. For example fish and milk.
To Joe Liker and other readers, The sensationalized headline of this article, “These Blood Pressure Drugs Cause Cancer” is more than irresponsible; it’s unethical and as Joe succinctly, thankfully points out, it’s a lie to falsely state the results of the study cited. Please do your own due diligence when it comes to anyone’s interpretations of medical studies and do not leave such interpretations to others who may have ulterior motives to offer slanted and/or untrue research study interpretations and/or results.
Certain Blood Pressure Medicines cause cancer… That's what it said in my email that led me to this article. Only when you read the article you don't list those drugs. What's the point of having the article if you're not going to tell me which medications to watch out for. If there's a link I don't see it. My husband takes blood pressure medications and it would be nice to know which ones you're talking about.
I agree with you Denise I take BP meds also and I didn’t see a list of the meds that cause cancer , this is something I would greatly appreciate
Hydrochlorothiazide is what I’ve been taking since 1997. Just found out I have a pituatiry mass don’t know if it’s cancerous yet.
Good piece of information about medicines
Diuretics, ace Inhibitors , beta blockers & CCA'S !
Thank you for the information .
