Every year we hear about new fad diet. And sometimes people who follow these diets seem to reap amazing results – quickly and permanently.
But look under the surface and you may find that a seemingly healthy diet causes serious consequences down the road; high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart attack and stroke.
This was the case when researchers tested one of the most popular and oldest fad diets- even though it’s recommended by thousands of doctors and “health experts.”
[adrotate group=”5″]Diets that follow a strict list of guidelines regarding the elimination of all carbohydrates, (even those that are rich in whole grains), instead favoring primarily lean meats and dairy, put people at risk of developing heart disease and other cardiovascular problems like high blood pressure.
These disturbing results, found during a study published in the British Medical Journal, show that the carb-free diets that are so popular are directly contributing to poor health.
The startling results of the study out of Great Britain looked at the health of participants who strictly adhered to diets that leave an entire food group out- grains and carbohydrates.
The diets, characterized by very high levels of proteins and little to no carbohydrate or starch, are generally made up of meat and dairy, but no bread, potatoes, rice, or other sources of grain-based nutrients.
In the study, people who stuck to this particular fad diet long term were shown to be at a 62% increased risk of developing heart disease and high blood pressure. Left untreated, these conditions lead to heart attack and stroke.
Culprits in the war on cardiovascular health that these high-protein diets contain are the very high levels of fat and protein.
While some fat and cholesterol is needed for optimum health, levels that are too high stress out the liver. As well, extremely high levels of protein can damage the kidneys, which is even worse if the person consuming them is diabetic.
The indirect insult comes from the lack of vitamins and minerals that only grain-based foods can provide, like soluble and insoluble fiber, folate, B vitamins and other nutrients critical to cardiovascular health.

Is this study a double blind exercise, or just something looked at in isolation? By fats what fats do they criticise, "vegetable" oils or saturated fats? What portion sizes are described? How many Kj or calories were consumed daily? What sort of carbs are the missing ones, white bread, for example? Should wheat, corn and soy be included in a diet recommended by the authors?
It all sounds very unscientific. Probably a waste of time, as so many badly conceived studies show.
What a hypocritical article you have written here Christian, you are making money selling an Atkins type diet to diabetics and now a complete reversal with this article….I assume that you will immediately withdraw your expensive Diabetes cure/management course that you sell….Very confusing?
First grains are bad now they are good? Soy is gmo, corn as well…. Studies contradict themselves all the time…it seems to me that researchers are paid by companies who want sell their products etc. All this contradictory information is confusing and not wothwhile.
I think eating moderation, just the other day I got a article that said eat bread white is ok, I am 80 years old, I have been eating little meat and fish and little dairy, muti vitamins for years.lots of fresh fruit in season. yourt and silk soy milk organic every day. being italian we eat pasta twice a week with tomato gravy with no meat.sweets very little. my blood pressure has been ok for my age. check it every day.everyday its different.
Everyone please read.
Good Job!!!!
I am disappointed with this article. The ideas are all incomplete and I believe inaccurate. What about Grass fed meats vs. gmo corn fed meats, free range chickens vs. factory chickens. You can find a study to confirm just about anything. I base my findings on how my diet works for me. Meat, vegetables and fruits all organic and appropriately fed. Grains are a once in awhile its ok type of food. We all tolerate foods differently.
Whatever diet one chooses leave anything that has been altered by Monsanto out of it. No matter what the food item is if Monsanto has anything to do with it don't eat it. Grains modified by Monsanto fed to farm animals or to humans are not fit for consumption in my opinion. The Monsanto factor in any diet should be the first item off the list.
This is the worst article I have seen here. First of all, most of the grains that we are told are healthy are not. Even if organic and whole, most contain toxins for most mammals, including human beings. This is how these plants discourage animals from eating their seeds, which interferes with their ability to propagate. Secondly the British study that you base this article on does not distinguish between high-quality proteins and ones that are unhealthy. For example, there are meats that are full of added hormones, antibiotics and other crap, and there are meats that are not. I have eaten a high-protein low-carb diet for almost my entire life. I was a competitive athlete for 30 of the 63 years I have been alive. I am extremely healthy. The key is that the fats and proteins that make up almost all of my diet are all high-quality and always have been. I eat a lot of wild-caught fish, game meats, bison, and for fats rely on coconut oil, organic butter, and olive oil that is never heated. I avoid all dairy products, except for organic butter. And I avoid almost all grains, and limit my sugars quite carefully. And many of my clients are on similar nutritional programs, also with great results, both short-term and long term. So please take that silly British study and put in the toilet, where it belongs. It is just more nutritional propaganda and disinformation that will not help anyone to be more healthy. If you want to read some really good writing on the subject, I recommend "The Primal Blueprint" by Mark Sisson, (also a high-level competing athlete for much of his life.)
What a poor article. All the anti ageing doctors Sears, Perricone etc, universally agree wheat and grains shorten lifespans. I agree one can eat too much protein and I know people who do but that is not the same thing as having a balanced diet full of meat fish and green veg etc.
The other thing to bear in mind is who wrote this? The British medical establishment. This is the very last place I would go to for advice as they will tell you all sorts of lies. For example take bp meds to try and control bp caused by stress instead of finding a good stress relieving technique or any one of a number of completely ridiculous suggestions. These are the last people I would consult if I had an issue.
Eat.fresh.f.you.lik.to.cook.and.cut.addivitivs.like…preservatives…..salt…sugar.added…and.try.flax.bread.out.of.california……try.some.turkey…ground…and.fish..and.chicken………fresh..veg..yes…walnuts….
This just shows that balance is always the best way. We need protein, fats and carbs. We need all flora of vitamins and minerals. Eating only one type of food or completely eliminating general category of food can never be good in the long haul. It’s just common sense.
When I first read that this study came out of Britain I thought unreliable! The biggest problem with heart health the last 50 years is all this hype that cholesterol isn't good for you. This sounds like another Agenda 21 tactic to me.
What about people with celiac disease or who are gluten sensitive? Are you saying they are all doomed to heart disease? Once upon a time grains used to be healthy. Now they are all genetically modified and full of pesticides. My blood pressure and cholesterol levels were normal until I went back to eating grains, bread and pasta. I am now going back to gluten free.
HI Jeff — I love eating this way! I am 72 and have unbelievable energy, and I can "fix" most any little ailment that comes up with homemade chicken soup and coconut oil! I am not perfect on this way of eating…I enjoy ice cream and some homemade baked goods. I have found that by following the "primal way" on a daily basis I can enjoy some treats without gaining weight or getting cravings. Of course, I am not an athlete, so perfection is not my goal…just feeling good and staying healthy is a blessing!
the body MUST have cholesterol to live! otherwise we 'dry' up! its not cholesterol , but franken-fats that we have developed in the industrial food industry. eat REAL fats.
