The results of a study revealed that even with just a ONE-time consumption of walnut oil and whole walnuts, blood vessel functioning drastically improved- which is extremely important in maintaining good cardiovascular health.
Researchers explain that walnut oil helps preserve the endothelial cells, the lining of the walls of blood vessels.
In addition, the performance of “good” HDL cholesterol after consuming whole walnuts and walnut oil was more effective in removing bad cholesterol from blood.
The researchers bring to light the powerful compounds responsible for amazing health benefits in walnuts.
1) Alpha- linolenic acid, which is a type of Omega-3 fatty acids found mainly in plants.
2) Gamma-tocopherol, known as the main form of Vitamin E.
3) Phytosterols ,a good cholesterol found in plants, powerful enough to remove harmful cholesterol from blood stream.
Given the results of the study, we can obviously conclude that the walnut is one food that we should definitely add to our health food list.

I have know idea how strong a flavour walnut oil has but does anyone think it would maintain its useful properities and that food would still taste good if one was to use it for cooking?

We already know quite a lot about dry fruits ability to ward off heart disease. Unfortunately, there are some down sides to them. These dry fruits like walnuts are high in calories. Eat them in moderation only. Do not overdo these or you might really not benefit from its benefits.
When you say walnuts are you referring to what we call ‘English walnuts’ or the black walnuts that grow here in the South? There is a lot of difference between the two, especially in price and taste. Please clarify.

I seem to recall that alpha-lenolenic is linked with prostate cancer. Looking like heart healthy fats, like a-lenolenic and fish oil are bad for the prostate.
Is this the black walnut, or the English paper shell walnut?

The article refers to what we call a regular Walnut or English Walnut.
There hasn’t been done too many studies about the Black Walnut and it’s nutrition value. However, the recent studies done to compare the English and Black Walnut showed that the regular English Walnut has 10 times as much antioxidant properties as the Black Walnut.
Also the same study showed that Black Walnut does not have the same capability to improve endothelial function of the blood vessels like the English Walnut.
Both the Black and English Walnut lowers cholesterol.
Its great news as the Black Walnut is so much more expensive than the English Walnut.
When you say consume the whole walnut, how does one consume the shell? Isn’t eating just the inside of the walnut sufficient? What do you mean by repeating Whole Walnut? Thank you.

I take synthroid (for hypo thryoid) and one of the caveats is: NO WALNUTS!

Almost every day they had one of such dishes, before in 1992-93

Eating nuts is very unlikely to make you fat…..in fact people often lose weight when consuming nuts regularly(they tend to be filling due to fat content)…..here is some more info

Eat nuts raw and unsalted…..from shells is best for freshness.
p.s the one person who asked if you should eat walnuts with their shells?If you have teeth like jaws from the james bond movie you would be fine! but its best to eat the meat inside and discard the shell.Same goes for brazil/almond/pistachio/macadamia/sunflower……..I eat all of the above every other day along with coconut shred and chia seeds.
they didn't say just one walnut they said eat them as a snack in between meals and use walnut oils,,,just like the apricot seed contains B-17 a known cure for cancer since 1952 pay attention to what you read , don't criticize it research it your self
I’d really appreciate receiving the citation for this study; I’d like to read the whole thing. They say that one group of participants ate whole walnuts (presumably with the shell), and another ate only the shell. I’d like to know how, exactly, they were able to eat walnut shells?!!

Walnuts cause my gums to get lesions, or, deteriorate. What can I do to prevent this? I will try to grind them and put them in my smoothies, and see if this works without the gum problem. Need more nuts! georgia c.

When certain foods are indicated to interfere with chemical/medicine/drugs I want to know more. It usually means they do the same thing as the drug thus affecting the efficacy. As often stated here maybe we should be taking a closer look at these superfoods instead of just popping the pills.
The problem with most dietry solutions to medical problems is non compliance. People get bored or don’t like the taste so it’s easier to do as you are told and take the pills.
I prefer to do my own research with help of websites like this one. Where there is a real food alternative I will give it a try.

Is it possible to get walnuts in capsules ? It would save getting gum lesions through chewing the rough texture of the nut (walnut)
I love walnut oil for sweeter salads like with carrots or in baking, like carrot cake/muffins. Not sure about cooking…BUT.. It's delicious.
This is promoting laziness. The best way to stay healthy and slim is to Exersice and eat fruit and veg, rather than pig out on chocolate and cakes. There are no cures for being over- Weight, there are however, pills to lower blood pressure ETC.
The Chinese use nut oil in their cooking. Simply because it can hear without burning as other oils such as vegetable oils.etc.
I have been eating walnuts for some time now since I had some coronary artery blockage. Had 2 stents put in. Doctor recommended what you just reported. I also just discovered the wonder of walnut oil for salads (and sometimes even cooking). I like to alternate between walnut oil and EVO. My blood pressure also has been improved and I am now down to 1 BP medication (from 3) – I am not sure how much the walnuts contributed to that, but my arteries have remained clear ever since.
Walnut oil is very mild with a slight sweetness to it. I have found it does not affect the flavor of the food (I only use it for sauteeing). I sometimes like to use peanut oil for its stronger flavor, but you have to experiment with it to see which foods it pairs up with to your liking. I sometimes brush it on veggies that I am grilling.

Obviously one has to consider contra indications just as you would with any medicine or treatments. Exercise is not always possible for some people such as arthritis sufferers.Consider all new treatments and ask questions .
