Studies abound that try to pinpoint which diseases, blood components, behaviors, or other variables will have the biggest impact on causing high blood pressure.
Oftentimes what was considered unhealthy yesterday becomes healthy today. Many types of foods are also advertised as heart healthy when indeed they’re a one way ticket to bursting high blood pressure.
[adrotate group=”5″]In today’s article we’ll list 7 types of foods that have always been and will always be the worst thing you can put inside your mouth- especially if you have high blood pressure.
Unhealthy food choices, especially when they are every day and over many years, can push your blood pressure to the boiling point.
Our bodies are designed to thrive on fresh foods as close to their natural state as possible. Processing it adds stress by the truckload and the biggest offenders are listed below:
1- Alcoholic beverages- while it is true that ONE glass of red wine with dinner can be helpful to keep blood pressure in check because of the antioxidant power, other beverages are not to be included in the red wine’s rank. For instance, beer, grain alcohols, and liqueurs are terribly damaging; this is especially true when taken in excess.
2- Frozen foods- While fresh frozen varieties of vegetables can be a great way to keep and store what you SHOULD be eating, the great benefits of fresh can be completely undone if the food is processed outside of just picking or cutting. For instance- frozen prepared meals with sauces or seasonings are most often packed with MSG, sodium, sugar, and chemicals.
3- Canned foods- The canning process not only cooks away the nutritive value of fruits and vegetables, but it also introduces a mountain of salt and sugar into what would have been a great food choice. Even low-sodium canned foods are not recommended for people with high blood pressure.
4- Prepared “Italian” foods- Whether they are frozen, canned, boxed or freeze-dried, foods that are prepared and packaged for convenience are packed with unhealthy chemicals, sodium, and extra sugar. Again here, many of the vitamins and nutrients have been cooked out before the processing for shelf life even begins.
5- Instant foods and food additives- meals that include prepared chicken or beef stock, bouillon cubes, or that have “quick” anywhere in the name as with oatmeal, should not be used by people with hypertension. While they are advertised by the producers as ‘healthy,’ they certainly are not in reality. This also goes for fast and fried foods. Outside of a salad with no dressing or a simple vinegar and oil, there are very few choices within the world of fast food that are healthy at all.
6- Carbonated soft drinks- Canned and bottled sodas have been around for so long that they have become a staple of the American diet. However, the sodium and sugar content in these beverages is astronomical. As well, when we drink these we are NOT drinking water, which is what we should be drinking in abundance. And the diet varieties have artificial sweeteners, which are suspected in a whole litany of diseases and conditions whose symptoms include high blood pressure.
7- “Energy” Drinks- We might as well call these ‘guaranteed hypertension’ drinks instead. Between the extreme amounts of caffeine, sugar, and other chemicals, people have been found to actually suffer heart failure when consuming these beverages. If you find that you “need” these types of drinks, it might be that you need to first consider what other changes in your lifestyle should be considered to give you more energy that won’t place you at risk of heart attack.
It’s true that whenever possible, fresh should take a much higher precedence over canned, boxed, or otherwise prepared. The power to eliminate high blood pressure and many other diseases can be found in simply eating the foods that nature already gives us. Processing the benefits right out of those foods is akin to not only opening the door to hypertension, but also flushing your money down the drain.
But first, what do you think? Did we miss something? Please leave your comment below.
Hotel A2K only for young pople who like to climb stairs and like very small rooms. No water pressure on the 3rd floor to take a shower. No thanks, not even for 10.00$.
I have a regulated dietw without any energy drinks and with ample of water…Strictly vegetarian food…I am happy with my pressure reading…I do take an allopathic pill after breakfast..Also some Ayurvedic medicines to improve and normalise the functioning of all the organs…May be it helps…
when a person gets in their 70’s it is impossible and very time consuming to read all the fine print on labels and who feels like standing over a stove and cooking fresh. We older people shouldn’t have to take a health course in what is safe to eat and what is not. And just as soon as you learn one way they change the rules–example-eggs,coffee,aspirin,etc
I am in my 70’s and I read all ingredients on an packets, tins or any other item I purchase. I prefer to buy fresh and cook it myself. I also prefer organic and purchase it whenever possible as not only does it taste better but does not have all the nasties sprayed on it.
I agree
I too am in my 70s and I: read the fine print on food packages (I must admit that reading same has limited the ‘foods’ that I do buy)and enjoy cooking.
I try to eat well but sometimes eat ‘forbidden’ food because it either tastes great or I happen to enjoy it.
I have returned to: saturated fat eg butter instead of dangerous substitutes, untrimmed meat (when available), eggs and full cream milk.
I credit 30ml of cod liver oil with yoghurt daily, for my eyesight improvement – I no longer wear glasses even to read the fine print on food packages.
Some people are old at 70 but I think that 70 is the new 45.
There in the messages from Jerry and Wendy highlights the problem. In a word compliance. People would rather pop a pill than eat wholesome food. It’s a choice. I choose to be healthy, These days you can get all your veggies precut if you wish. Pop them in a steamer you’re done, better still eat them raw. Don’t let age be a barrier to common sense.
Soft drinks today are even more damaging than the ones that used real sugar years ago.
Even bottled teas are also using high fructose corn syrup. I got a bottle while waiting for a flight. I did drink it anyway and will not order another.
The Coke in Mexico is still using real sugar as are their Fuze teas so would be less damaging than what is sold in the US.
Did not look at Pepsi or their other brands to see what they are using in either the US or Mexico.
I am 57 this year and started eating according to my bloodgroup last year…..I feel MUCH younger. My son last saw me almost 18 months ago this weekend. He is amazed at how good I LOOK! Use the bloodgroup diet as a guide line and you will be much healthier. http://www.dadamo.com and http://www.naturefresh.co.za . Life is in the blood!
Yes, I agree.
I sure agree!
Do canned tomatoes belongs to the same group of processed food?
agree
very useful
I should think canned tomatoes without salt should be fine. Canned tomatoes contain more leutin than fresh ones.
Yes I agree that processed, frozen and canned foods are not good for blood pressure and and healthy lifestyle as a whole. That’s the reason why I buy fresh produce and cook dinner myself instead of buying ready made food.
I just hate it that FDA and our government are against our good health! I want them to get rid of the ‘bad” things, and make companies quit putting harmful ingredients into food and drink items! (as well as other items we use)
I drink only water. I do like carbonated water, but have it seldom, now. I do eat fried chicken now and then; no beef, no lamb, no turkey, lots of cold sea fish, lots of chicken, boiled and broiled, greens, veggies, fresh and raw, and no whites, such as white flour, white rice, seldom have white potatoes. I like these new ways to eat, back to the horse and buggy days as far as food is concerned, but I am not sure many people can or will do this. In fact, your article, though very smart, may brush some the wrong way! Keep it up, Christian! (I am hungry for a nice steak, but not bad enough to actually eat one). I never crave sodas now! I read all food labels, well, all labels! Thanks for the “push”, georgia
Thanks Georgia, i am Georgia too, i don’t have to say anything, you said all, exactly i wanted to say, thank you so much and God Bless you,i agree on everything you said, have a nice and healthy day! Georgia Kovack!
Hi, my name is Anubis and I belong to the 50’s generation when they were not many cases of High Blood Pressure like now a days. Time had changed and we run faster, we work more and sleep less, including food had changed, one of the biggest causes of High Blood Pressure, i do not say we should go back on time , but yes take every thing as easy as possible and take time to cook at home, and follow this fantastic program of Blue Heron Health News, and like many people we will find a good positive change in our BP for ever.Happy life for every one with Blue Heron!!
Christian, or anyone else, have you heard of papaya and crab meat lowering blood pressure?
Jerry Baker (Windsor Ont) says it does. He has a book ‘Kitchen counter cures’, anyone heard of it
or has it?
Brilliant – thank you. I’m just on the verge of another attempt to drop both blood pressure and cholesterol. Bran and soya milk for 10 days PLUS omitting any of these seven PLUS meditation on the Word “Shalom” three times a day ought to do it. Watch this space……….
I agree with anything that will drop my pressure to normal and as far as foods I do eat healthy and I will keep it that way. Way to go guys! You really don’t need to drink all theses sugary garbages, water is the best think you could ever put in your mouth so you can do the same
I new that Papaya does the trick and I will definitly try The cod liver oil and Yoggurt
Thank you so much
Thanks for this very interesting article. Seems that all of the processed foods are really not good for us.
I am 80 and just started eating only fish and chicken and fresh vegetables. I have lost 30 pounds and feel great and walk an hour a day. If it is too much trouble or tiring to fix healthy food then it is more important than ever that you get started now.
You are 80! I am so glad I can look to see what 80 looks like! Great woman, great example!
Anything served in a restaurant!
I still think of you as 50..truth!
That is awesome, Jackie! You don't look 80 and you are a great example.
