A cousin to the common tea rose is being heralded as one of the most powerful and easy-to-find herbal remedies for high blood pressure, dangerous cholesterol, heart disease, and more.
And it’s not even anything new; in fact, healers throughout many generations have used its leaves, berries, and bark to cure a cacophony of problems, with researchers finally taking notice.
Researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center have recently released a study looking at the many benefits of the hawthorn bush.
This cousin to the common rose is a thorny shrub that grows in sunny places all over the world. It has blooms like the rose, and even has berries that form after the blooms die off in early June.
These berries have been used in compounds for supplements because of the extremely high antioxidant content. The chemicals act as vaso-dilators, which help to soften the blood vessels in people who suffer from high blood pressure.
People with high blood pressure have systolic readings (top number) of at least 140 for a sustained period of time. Systolic pressure is the measurement of the pressure of the blood against arterial walls during a heartbeat. Uncontrolled, high pressure damages the vessels causing them to harden.
That’s why herbs that act as natural vaso-dilators are so effective. They help to relax the vessels, preventing damage that would otherwise result from the continued insult of high blood pressure.
The compounds were also found to clean the arteries of the dangerous LDL cholesterol that builds up within the arterial walls which eventually leads to deadly plaque build-up.
And just when you thought the benefits were limited to the major vessels deep inside the body… hawthorn extract has been used for many centuries to treat skin sores and boils due to its healing properties with capillaries in the skin.
But first… Please leave your comments below. Have you used hawthorn? What’s your experience? What do you think?
Hawthorn helped take a few extra points off my BP when used with my Rx for Cardizem.
Hawthorn helped take a few extra points off my BP when used with my Rx for Cardizem. I tried combining Hawthorn and other herbs without using my BP meds but it wasn’t very effective. Perhaps I could have tried a higher dose.
Would the Haws be benefitial. There was no name for the red tablets shown in the article.
I have not tried the hawthorn extract yet, but will give it a go.
Just taking a daily does of Hawthorne Berry Tincture is better than not taking it, I’ve been taking this as “A First Thing In The Morning” herbal treatment and it works for me, the other way to look at it is it cannot do you any harm.
Hawthorne berries, not red tablets.
No mention was made of how much hawthorn would be beneficial. I take the herbal supplement – one a day – but don't know if that's enough or not.
i tried a lot of products bought on the net
i spent a lot of money ,my BP
I think you have to combine Hawthorn with other herbs like cayenne for it to work best.
I've tried Hawthorn but it didn't do anything for me
I take two a day, but I think the dose recommended elsewhere is 2, 3 times a day. I'll up mine to that if my bp and LDL start going up again.
Hi there;
I have chased so many things that are to be the best to lower blood pressure. It is time for someone to come up with a group of items, easily available, that a person could use for a whole meal. The group would be known to reduce blood pressure over time. I question if my chasing has lowered my pressure. I’m currently staying with veggies, fruit, nuts, and have dropped bread and salt. My pressure is steadily coming down. Combined with all this food is walking/running 54 floors in my apartment building. If you are over weight, for blood pressure lowering, the weight must come off, too. Other things I’ve dropped are sugar, desserts, colas, most booze, dressings, etc. Shedding the weight is helping and having a big Will to correct weight and BP is a real need. Having been on this for two months now, I have shed 7 pounds, my mind is far clearer and I would say my pressure is down 20 on the Systolic. I will stay on this as I would love to see 20 more points off. This is likely my food intake for the rest of my life. If you think you can go back to what you ate, forget dieting. Another item I have given up on is eating any processed food…..it is poison just as is white flour. I’m convinced, eating right will rid you of many ailments
we run to Doctors for. Get harsh with yourself, enjoy your new food and feel tons better! I’ve forgotten fish here. I’ve substituted fish for most of the red meat I ate. Fish and Turkey are my main meats now.
